That said, I’m simply presenting facts here. I for one appreciated Petro when he was here but we don’t need to rehash another Theo/bleeder Petro thread.
But as for his HHOF credentials, I consider him borderline. But he’s won 2 Cups and led both of those Cup teams in ATOI, was captain of one and asst captain of the other. In fact, he’s the only player in NHL history to lead two separate franchises in ATOI to a Cup (both teams first Cup wins to boot). He has at least as good of a resume as Shea Weber IMO so for that, I’d probably say he eventually gets in. But he’s borderline IMO.
Correct.
AP makes a strong case because he's a very good defenceman.
I think he eventually gets in, but he's definitely not a first ballot guy.
Certainly has knocks against him when it comes to the voters.
Never been in the conversation for any major award - he has two 4th place finishes for the Norris (and a very distant fourth both years), and not even in the ballpark for anything else.
Part of that is he plays a simple, uncomplicated game, and he's not flashy, and there's a place for that in the HOF....eventually. Which I always find disappointing. It's became the "Hall of Very Good."
As far as the Parayko / Bouwmeester / Pietrangelo discussion goes - yes, the Parayko / Bouwmeester pairing were the shut down guys and dealt with all of the other team's top players, which allowed Pietrangelo to flourish against second line players. Perfect recipe for success.
If it was fully the Hall of Very Good then Tkachuk would be in the Hall and he’s not. And I agree he shouldn’t be. But agree there’s some guys in the Hall I wouldn’t have voted in. But conversely, plenty of guys that continually get snubbed that think should be in.
I may regret discussing this further but regarding the 2019 playoffs, I’ll agree that Berube put Bouw-Parayko together to use as the shutdown pair. That wasn’t really the case in the regular season and I still very much considered Petro the #1 D.
A couple further thoughts. I tried looking for 2019 playoffs QoC data but couldn’t find it. But let’s assume Petro primarily played against the opponents 2nd line most of the time (knowing the Blues didn’t have the last change in all away games and thus couldn’t dictate matchups). Were the Jets, Stars, Sharks and Bruins 2nd lines really that much less quality than the 1st lines? I honestly don’t recall all the lines but all of those teams were pretty deep so my thought is the QoC really wouldn’t be all that different.
The other thing I want to mention is Petro led the D in goals, points, time on ice etc dragging the corpse of Joel Edmundson with him. Or Gunnar when he was paired with Petro. Petro was fantastic while carrying a pairing with a subpar partner.
I tend to avoid these discussions as they’re generally just a troll trying to needle people but I think that constant needling and the way Petro exited the org left people to undervalue his contributions during he was here and partially during the Cup run in an attempt to discredit him to play gotcha with the troll.
