Come on. The Cubs are just a better team and they were playing at home all three games.
What got him fired in St Louis reportedly was going on a local sports talk radio show and saying he did as well as could be expected given the lack of talent on the team. That's still the excuse?

San Diego's payroll is higher than the Cubs.
And we all know payroll is the only measuring stick. Not a smart take
Teams had identical records. One has a higher payroll. Same old excuse - not enough talent?

The cardinals always have a higher payroll than the brewers yet the brewers are leaps and bounds better than the cardinals so is it the cardinals don’t have as much talent as the brewers or is it the managers fault?

Who's responsible for developing the players? Isn't that the manager and coaches? Counsell had a losing record against Matheny but I'll go out on a limb and say he's better than Shildt when it comes to developing talent.

Well, let’s see. The cubs have drafted and developed and therefore have more cost controlled guys. The padres built their team through acquisitions. Roster construction has nothing to do with the manager.
Oh and Musgrove was out all season. Darvish was hurt half the year and appears to just be getting old. Everyone knows Xander was a massive overpay. Again, those are things that can’t be put on the manager. Just like Arenado getting old isn’t olis fault. Nor was singing sonny gray.

When Shildt went on a local radio show to say he couldn't win because of the lack of talent he had been in the Cardinals system as a scout, coach and manager for 15 years before they fired Matheny and gave Shildt the job. Now he can't win in San Diego with the #6 payroll in MLB.

At some point it’s on the manager. At another point it’s on the players. Having a high payroll means he has stars. They must perform, not him. He must be accountable for 2-3 decisions per game.

As has been noted, the Padres top three were 2 ish for 20 something. Nobody wins like that.

I think a better measurement is season record.

I'm pretty it's the manager who fills out the lineup. Game 1 he started 3 left handed batters in a row vs a LHP starter. They went a collective 0-9. Swanson at second base he intentionally walks a home run/strikeout guy Busch to pitch to Hoerner who is a line drive hitter and has a 40 point higher batting average.

They did have a lack of talent. Good for the manager challenging the front office to ge better players. The FO apparently skin is too thin to have a guy trying to manage up.
Shildt has made it to the playoffs every year he has been the manager and you’re ragging on him. That is so lame. Hopefully Mussgrove is healthy next season. Amazing what a difference a TOR pitcher can make in a 3 game series.

He was getting paid for scouting the developing the talent he was complaining about for 15 years. San Diego should be a dream job for him. Loaded with high dollar free agents.

Oh yeah. It was his sole responsibility to develop all the talent in the cardinals organization. Your arguments are childish and lack any substance. Just meathead barstool talk
