Re: Shildt doing less with more
The Padres did not lose the playoff to the cubs because of Shildt. He handled his pitching staff well, and they were superb, holding the cubs to 6 runs in 3 games. He played the best lineup he had available.
The Padres lost the series primarily due to their first 3 batters in the lineup not coming thru. Tatis was 1 for 12, Arraez 2 for 11, Machado 1 for 10. All of their hits came in game 2, which the Padres won.

That’s strong. We can then say the Cubs also pitched well.12xu wrote: ↑03 Oct 2025 07:30 am The Padres did not lose the playoff to the cubs because of Shildt. He handled his pitching staff well, and they were superb, holding the cubs to 6 runs in 3 games. He played the best lineup he had available.

What about 2020,2021,2022,2024 and now 202512xu wrote: ↑03 Oct 2025 07:30 am The Padres did not lose the playoff to the cubs because of Shildt. He handled his pitching staff well, and they were superb, holding the cubs to 6 runs in 3 games. He played the best lineup he had available.

He did win his 1 and only series in 2019 but then went on to get swept by the Nats 0-4.
He consistently loses in the playoffs.

Starting Darvish was a bad move. Going to the DH has helped him a lot because he loved to make bad double switches.12xu wrote: ↑03 Oct 2025 07:30 am The Padres did not lose the playoff to the cubs because of Shildt. Re: Shildt doing less with more
The Padres fail because the hitters they count on most Tatis and Machado and Boogaerts are all RH. Reminds me of Cards lineup with Arenado and Goldschmidt who Cardinals relied on most. Most teams closers are RH so those guys are easy to plan for late.

Shildt, Oli and MM the trifecta of incompetent rookie managers Mo hired. Who can forget oli staring like a deer in the headlights as helsley melted down in the post season

His Cardinal team got shutout by 9 bullpen pitchers in the decisive game 3 vs San Diego in 2020.
His Cardinal team got 1 run vs the Dodgers in the 2021 WC game.
His Padre team swept WC series vs Braves in the 2024 WC game.
His Padre team got shutout twice by the Dodgers in the last two games of the 2024 NLDS.
His Padre team got beat by the cubs in 2025 primarily due to his 1-2-3 batters in the lineup getting 0 hits in the 2 losses.
Re: Shildt doing less with more
They have a top 3 pitching staff nothing to do with Shildt.

5 playoffs. 0 wins. He inherited fantastic veteran rosters twice and can't win when it counts.12xu wrote: ↑03 Oct 2025 07:30 am The Padres did not lose the playoff to the cubs because of Shildt. Re: Shildt doing less with more
Winning a playoff series is 274% luck. It has nothing to do with having a better manager, better roster, or whatever. It is all a giant (bleep) shoot. You should not evaluate any team based on the playoffs because winning in the playoffs has little to do with being the best team, especially in a three game series.
Winning the World Series and being the best team are basically unrelated at this point.

Why I wasn't mad to see him canned, overrated by many.Alex Reyes Cy Young wrote: ↑03 Oct 2025 06:39 amHe’s absolutely horrific in the playoffs.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑03 Oct 2025 06:35 am Inherited great rosters both in St Louis and San Diego. 0-5 in the playoffs.
But looked good compared to Matheny and Oli.

Re: Shildt doing less with more
This is what happens in the playoffs when a team has a very good SP that night. I am Not a fan of the very short series. Its way too easy to completely shutdown elite hitters for 1 night. Or maybe 2 nights out of 3. Give them 7 games and lots of different pitching matchups and the talent will normalize and come thru to the extent it can and should.12xu wrote: ↑03 Oct 2025 07:30 am The Padres did not lose the playoff to the cubs because of Shildt. Agree on Oli. Matheny won a pennant. I can only wish for a manager that bad today.rockondlouie wrote: ↑03 Oct 2025 10:26 amWhy I wasn't mad to see him canned, overrated by many.Alex Reyes Cy Young wrote: ↑03 Oct 2025 06:39 amHe’s absolutely horrific in the playoffs.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑03 Oct 2025 06:35 am Inherited great rosters both in St Louis and San Diego. 0-5 in the playoffs.

Matheny was nothing more than a passenger, inheriting a loaded team.....he was a horrible manager.Carp4Cy wrote: ↑03 Oct 2025 10:31 amAgree on Oli. Matheny won a pennant.
