Is Bregman a superstar worth 5/$175 or $35m per year in his ages 32-36? No. Not a great bargain. Betting he isn't close to the star he was aged 28-31. Putting aside that he isn't a great use of money......
STL is in a rebuild. You don't throw money at aging stars on their down slope during a rebuild. And the rebuild is going quite well but seems you are missing or dissing it. When the new Owner/Player contract is signed next year and STL has figured out who is real (and I think they are close) then they can spend money on some veteran talent to make a run. Might still be a year early and might want to stay the course on getting talent at a batter cost basis than Bregman.
Based on current obligations they have a lot of room to spend. Hopefully money better spent than what the Cubs are getting from Bregman.
Bregman sure would have looked good at 3rd for the Cards.

Short sample size bias. You have no idea how his entire season will go. I have no real axe to grind here. I'm no huge fan of Bregman. Did the Cubs overpay? Maybe. Probably. But they have a legitimate bat at third base and he just beat the Cards today. At least they're trying to win. The Cards ownership made it clear from the get go that they want to lose. I can't support that bull.Maplebutterworth wrote: ↑30 Jul 2026 18:21 pmYou're right. Pay no attention to the stats in front of you. And that is exactly what you DON'T do when you don't have a sufficient core of young, cost controlled players ready to "win now."CCard wrote: ↑30 Jul 2026 21:49 pmShort sample size bias. AFTER the Cardinals have a sufficient core of young, cost controlled players in place, maybe then you can think about paying/overpaying for that last piece or two that you need to "win now."
But it would just be foolish to for them to lock themselves into a deal like Bregman's (who is likely to continue declining in the mid-to-late 30s) now when they aren't ready to compete.
Spending has to be smart and timely if a team like the Cardinals is going to win another WS anytime soon.

Okay, Mo. Signing old players based on their career stats is what got the Cardinals in the situation we are at. But, hey, if you want to bring that back, good for you. I'm looking forward to another Cubs rebuild in a few years because of dumb signings like this.

Meanwhile, they're most likely going to make the playoffs and have a puncher's chance at winning it all. But stay comfortable in the knowledge that you support saving the BILLIONAIRE owners some much needed and deserved money.Ronnie Dobbs wrote: ↑31 Jul 2026 08:03 amOkay, Mo. Saving BILLIONAIRE owners money is the primary concern. Because competing yearly is too much effort. Meanwhile, teams like the Cubs will probably get their tickets punched and have a chance to win the whole thing. You must be so happy.mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑31 Jul 2026 06:59 amAnd that is exactly what you DON'T do when you don't have a sufficient core of young, cost controlled players ready to "win now."CCard wrote: ↑30 Jul 2026 21:49 pmShort sample size bias. Just curious, when the Cubs and Astros went through years of 100 losses during their rebuilds and shedding salary at every turn, were they not trying? Were their fans sheep?

Perhaps you missed it. Everyone responding to this thread considers you the idiot. Go ahead and whine because the team won't waste money and won't continue on the losing path of the last 10 years.CCard wrote: ↑30 Jul 2026 21:43 pmYou are sooooo dumb! Dumbest post of the season. Ask 100 cubs fans if they’re happy about Bergman’s production for the contract and all 100 would say no effing way.
You probably want Swanson too.
The conclusion from your recent takes, idk, maybe all of your takes, is that you’re a troll. If so, all good. But if you’re actually serious about your points, I hope you know more about other subjects than you do baseball

Perhaps you missed it. You don't live in reality and you certainly lie. Now, go ahead and whine because some of us fans don't like the prospect of tanking and losing for years so that ownership can save some cash. Go lick DeWitt's boots some more sycophant.AZ_Cardsfan wrote: ↑31 Jul 2026 10:41 amPerhaps you missed it. Everyone responding to this thread considers you the idiot. He only looks good against us. He’s hitting over .400 vs us in July and .177 vs everyone else.

Re: Bregman sure would have looked good at 3rd for the Cards.
CC’s philosophy is what got the Stros in a deep hole in the first place…
The team was very average, maybe a notch below…..and the entire organization was substandard
but….there was a recurring theme,,,,that the owner endorsed…that if they just signed that guy….or that guy…or maybe that guy…(without addressing the organizational issues)…they could compete…
That strategy was a complete failure….and finally with a new owner and Luhnow a fair analysis of the team was made…they blew it up….dumped the big money dead weight….and stopped foolish signings
Cards are on the right path…,,and they are not trying to lose….every player is trying as they want to stay in the bigs.
but their is limited talent…….
It’s a good plan….give it a chance
