I agree that Saggese needed to go down, but not necessarily why others think he should. Yes, he needs regular at bats, and wasn’t getting that at all, thanks to the hot hitting Ramon Urias! 8O
If anybody has ever paid any attention to Saggese in his career, he’s the type of player that just will not produce at the plate with sporadic appearances. He has to see regular playing time. If you give him the at bats that Urias has gotten and let him play once a week for Winn and JJ, he would have gotten those regular at bats. The fact he hasn’t hit is mostly on the Cardinals, in my opinion. The team has to know their players better than they are showing. Once again, I’ll state, that I feel the signing of Urias was a stupid move and unnecessary. It is proof that the Cardinals had little faith in Gorman, and Saggese.

Would suspect the move is more about sending Saggese down to get playing time so that he is able to contribute effectively in a utility role as the season progresses- Saggese can be valuable off the bench if he is hitting.

Really doesn’t matter whether Prieto hits right left or both relative to the fact he’ll be a spectator until either Saggese or Noot is ready. Too bad they can’t use the spot for another reliever.

Sag's was pretty much getting regular playing time from 4-1 thru 4-14. You are right about him not hitting with sporadic appearances. But that's what is available for him and he's been awful.

To get sent down before VS2 has to be a kick in the balls.
You post some really goofy stuff. This is about a backup infielder replacing your backup SS. Scott has nothing to do with that.
You could probably get somebody to explain it to you.
Yes you like to complain thats the explanation
That doesn’t make any sense. That doesn’t explain what I said. Leave wit to those that are witty. Concentrate on poor hitting centerfielders.
Saggese was 0 for his last 20 with 10 strikeouts. Does that not constitute as poor hitting?

He played his way out of playing time Fermin played his way into playing time they both have similar skill sets don’t steal bases don’t hit for power can play the infield and outfield. Fermin has earned it saggs has earned his demotion

Oli addressed the Saggese situation postgame. He said that it was obvious tht Sags would only be utilized in one game , then sit the next three games .Playing no more than twice in a week would not help him improve his pitch recognition which needs a big improvement. By playing at Memphis , he can play regularly and try to improve that skill. '
So that's why Oli sent him down so he could get many more at bats rather than sit the bench and pinch hit now and then. Just made sense to Oli to go that route.

I agree with Oli.

Tommy played himself out of PT.
IF they see him having any upside at all he needed to be sent
down, imo.
Prieto soon to be 27 deserved a shot and very well may be the better player.
I agree that Prieto has earned a shot. I just don't see where they slide him in. Is he the backup SS and 2B if Winn or JJ need a day off? Backup 1B if Burly needs a day? 3B already has Gorman and Urias.
if you take away a middle infielding back up...shouldn't you replace him with someone who plays the middle infield? Torres plays 2B, yes...but not SS. And Prieto also plays 3B...which Saggese did as well.
Isn't Fermin also capable of backing up SS?
Yes, though I think I'd place Prieto into the "backup" category and Fermin into the "utility" category. As in, Fermin can spell a guy on an off day, but Prieto can fill the role while a guy is on the IL or something
i get that -- i guess i was just thinking it could have been an opportunity for Torres (it still could be if Scott is sent down) -- Fermin is capable of spelling Winn a day here or there but if something worse happened either Saggese or Prieto aren't far away.
Gotta figure Torres vs Scott is the next decision. Maybe Crooks
It's bullass and a half (donkey) if that doesn't happen very soon

It's like giving Torres a real shot is against the law.

Torres might end up a bust.

But precedent for guys who hit as consistently as him who walks more than he strikes out with no power is that he will be a .400OBP+ guy in he show.

When you have no power and you average a walk a game. Your batting eye and plate discipline must be fantastic

Saggese was a huge disappointment. I remember one long time poster thought he would be a star because he had one decent minor league season.

I see this as a roster balancing issue. Sending down an infielder for another infielder. We have a glut of infielders. Most average at best. At the same time we have no depth in the outfield.

We came into the season with an unbalanced roster. Should have been addressed prior to now.

I doubt the Cardinals will promote Torres anytime soon. However, if he keeps hitting, he will get his shot at some point. At least when rosters expand.
Urias is not hitting (0.158/0.279/0.316/0.595) and he's committed 3 errors at 3B in just 144 innings. He's not a prospect, but just a gap filler. He's expendable at some point and could eventually be replaced with Torres. Preito and Torres can manage his innings at 3B.
Scott is a seperate deal. I'm rooting for VSII, but when Noot returns, I can see him headed back to AAA.

Urias offers a really good glove who can play all four OF positions. He has hits RHP well and, given the type of contract, doesn't require a lot of playing time.

Is this a slow pitch league with four OF positions? . . . . LOL.

I really hope he doesn't require a lot of playing time, because he has added nothing when he does play.

Maybe. But, he hasn't done any of those things this season:
  • He's committed 4 errors already (1 at 1B with just 15 innings, 3 at 3B in just 144 innings.
He's not hitting RHP, actually worse than LHP - .122/.213/.171/.384 - No HRs
I'm not saying drop him today (or even soon), but if the trends continue, he could be moved easily.

      1. My bad. I meant LHP.
      2. Though he has committed 3 errors, historically, we know he's better than that. He also hit 2 HR in like the first week. We all know that's not part of his game either.

These are the type of unsexy pickups that tend to pay off during a 162 game season.
