Tommy played himself out of PT.
IF they see him having any upside at all he needed to be sent
down, imo.
Prieto soon to be 27 deserved a shot and very well may be the better player.
I agree that Prieto has earned a shot. I just don't see where they slide him in. Is he the backup SS and 2B if Winn or JJ need a day off? Backup 1B if Burly needs a day? 3B already has Gorman and Urias.
if you take away a middle infielding back up...shouldn't you replace him with someone who plays the middle infield? Torres plays 2B, yes...but not SS. And Prieto also plays 3B...which Saggese did as well.
Isn't Fermin also capable of backing up SS?
Yes, though I think I'd place Prieto into the "backup" category and Fermin into the "utility" category. As in, Fermin can spell a guy on an off day, but Prieto can fill the role while a guy is on the IL or something
i get that -- i guess i was just thinking it could have been an opportunity for Torres (it still could be if Scott is sent down) -- Fermin is capable of spelling Winn a day here or there but if something worse happened either Saggese or Prieto aren't far away.
Gotta figure Torres vs Scott is the next decision. Maybe Crooks

Do NOT just sit him on the bench.

Play him to get a look at his skills. Hope ST was not an exception, excited to see him play.

I'm confused.

2023 trades are still giving, though....Prieto gets his turn. Never played SS with the Cards Org until this year. I haven't followed much of his defensive prowess there. I know his 3B was meh to average...athletic enough, made some good running catches...but not overly great/good.

Glad he got his chance though...working on 3 seasons in AAA. Bout time for the chance
And Dakota Hudson has the best sinker of all time

He definitely ain’t cracking into Wetherholt/Winn. Gorman is at an interesting stage. His saving grace this year is his defense at 3B has been solid.

+1

Maybe they like Prieto's extra pop off the bench compared to Torres. The bench with the regular lineup had all righties prior to this move, so this gives an extra option?

Where's he playing though
He isn't a starter. He is replacing a bench player.
IF Tommy only held that role due to his ability to hit RH
he wasn't filling it very well.
vs LHP

Urias is capable of filling in at SS in the short term as well. If Winn were to go on the IR, then they would have to decide who the SS is for extended game action. It would not be Urias, Fermin, or Prieto IMO. Neither of the 3 are replacement level defensive SS IMO.

Exactly.
Less available work for a #6 LH hitting infielder than there is an RH in the same role who has the added ability to play LF.
Only reason to do this is to get PA's for Saggese at Memphis while perhaps giving Prieto a little more MLB tape for other teams to look at with an eye on the summer trade deadline.
Its probably as much about getting Saggase some at bats while still being able to cover SS if needed. They are more willing to let Prieto waste away on the bench than Saggase, although I am guessing Saggase himself might not be long for the organization. Especially if his hitting doesnt pick up.

I think the move was for several reasons one I think Fermin has beat saggs out for playing time two they probably want saggs getting regular at bats which he wasn’t getting here and three they had a redundancy of three right handed infielders and he at least gives them a left handed bat off the Bench to probably bat for Fermin late in the game and four prieto was hitting at well Memphis and deserved a shot. Now send Scott down and bring up Torres

Good for Prieto, MLB cup of coffee he deserves. Good for Saggese, still young enough to "figure something out" in AAA with regular playing time.

LH PH off the bench when you need a baserunner. I can't see him getting very many starts between SS, 2B, and 3B against RHP.
