Knies just signed for 6 x $7.75. That’s a heck of a deal. Do JT and Knies for likely less than Marner alone
WOW... An RFA without hitting 30 goals snagged $7.75 MILLION... Thanks Leafs for messing up the market.
That’s my read of it too.
Holloway scored more pts in fewer games. He’s going to want a contract like that too now.
Leafs players seems to consistently get overpaid IMO.
He played 18.5 minutes this year and more than that in the playoffs on a very talented team. He also was physical and took a big step forward. You pay for those things.
Yea Knies might have been the most consistently noticeable player for the Leafs. I’d take that deal all day for him.
But yea MN, Holloway is getting at least that. He always was. Why would he sign long term otherwise?
He was bullied by Florida before and went head with guys like Bennett. I thought he overwhelmed Bennett physically at times.

Friedman stated on his podcast that if Vegas signs Marner, the leafs could accuse Vegas of tampering. He was clear that he has no evidence, but has heard it from a couple sources. He also mentioned that the league is “itching” to make an example out of someone.
However, he also reported that if it were a trade for rights or a sign and trade then the accusations would likely never happen.
Is this the Leags posturing to get s better deal? Rather than just letting Marner walk for nothing?
Apparently there's a rumor out there that Marner and wife have been shopping for a house in Vegas.

Knies has real promise, but he's had ONE solid NHL season and still has holes in his game (foot-speed and he still gets a bit lost at times). He very well could turn into the PF the Leaf's need, but after those last four games in the playoffs this year (Florida OWNED him) he still has some growing to do.
That said, they did pick-up a few of his UFA years so there is that, but paying $7.5 Million for a kid who didn't hit 60pts is going to hit the league hard.
Honestly I think they saved themselves money. If I was a betting man, just watching Knies, I would say with very high confidence he will get better and better absent some insane injury. He is not going to be cheaper to sign in three years if they gave him a bridge.
I think this is the new NHL thinking. Lock up guys on the younger side before they break out even if you have to pay more on the front end than you could get on a shorter deal.
John Mozeliak has been doing that for years. We are still waiting for some of the guys to whom he gave those contracts to actually break out. And the contract in question has already expired.

No doubt there is always a bit of a gamble doing it. The key is identifying the right guys to take that gamble on. Mozeliak has been generally awful at it. But if I'm Treliving, Knies is absolutely a guy I'm willing to take this gamble on. I feel the same way about Holloway with the Blues.
Event though it's Vegas, it is a little bush league of Toronto to leverage this to try to make up for their bad roster management. Is what Vegas allegedly did any different from the leadup to Toronto signing Tavares ( even before the negotiating period) ?

Oh yeah I agree with the approach. I actually started off that post planning to say Mo was ahead of his time but then I realized that's not the direction I wanted to go with it.

No tampering charges. Trade is done, per Seravelli. 8yrs, 12m per. Waiting for details on the return to TOR.
Really? Holy shet.
The level of disdain I have for Vegas grows every (bleep) offseason and trade deadline. Can’t wait to hear what sort of shenanigans they pulled this time around.

Without Petro, assuming he in fact misses the playoffs, which is a huge assumption on my part, they are going the Leaf/Oiler route of trying to outscore everyone. Their D is highly suspect. Hill wasn’t great vs the Oilers and they are going to lose most of their depth.

Here’s hoping. Nothing would make me happier than if Vegas pooped the bed. They’ll make a run though.
