He’s gotten good results. I’m saying that he’s done this in spite of not pitching all that well.
You can disagree without being a doooosh. I haven’t danced away from anything.

Re: Mikolas is kicking butt....
I think you are wrong. He's gotten good results and pitched well for a significant period of time. No argument about low BABIP. Just pitching very well and getting very good results. An Old Friend wrote: ↑24 May 2025 15:51 pmWhat exactly am I not owning up to? He has a .180 BABIP against in May with a 4.64 FIP / 4.90 xFIP. Thats way more in line with his 4.66 ERA in the first month than his 2.01 ERA in May.
Nice to see him getting good results. I’d view it as unsustainable.
MM may have found something…
Sorry - I don’t see the results as sustainable. Maybe management thinks as long as they don’t let him go past 20ish batters and 80ish pitches, he’ll get outlier results.
Not that you said this, but I’m not going off 2 or 3 starts in a row. I’m just saying 40% of his earned runs in 10 starts came from a stinker where he only threw about 4% of his total innings.
So in 9 of his 10 starts, he’s given up a total of 12 runs, for a 2.24 era.
Could be smoke and mirrors? But seems something has changed since ‘23-‘24.
Re: Mikolas is kicking butt....
I would assume he can't pitch at this pace forever, but even doing anything close to this is a good thing. An Old Friend wrote: ↑24 May 2025 08:48 amHe’s had a fortunate run here of late but don’t let that fool you into believing he’s pitching like a 1 or 2.

Re: Mikolas is kicking butt....
Most likely, but if he pitches any where near like he's pitching now and can be had cheap, well, you never have enough pitching as they say.scoutyjones2 wrote: ↑24 May 2025 08:15 amNooooo! This is his last season as a Card. No mas! Trade him at the deadline if you can
Re: Mikolas is kicking butt....
I’m a fan of QOs. If he finishes strong give him one. Worst case he accepts and still maybe he performs next year. Eaither way it won’t break us for 1 year.blackinkbiz wrote: ↑23 May 2025 23:52 pmFO had better not be duped by his contract-year performance and extract every pitch they can get and let him walk this offseason.ICCFIM2 wrote: ↑23 May 2025 23:29 pmSure looks that way. IMO he's the biggest surprise in this shocking month.
Also, a shout out to the umpire tonight. He was terrible. Marmol gets objected and that umpire looked irate arguing with Marmol. Then he umped a near perfect game after that. I will give him credit for improving and not holding a grudge.
And that at bat of Herrera's was terrible. According to GameDay, ump called a ball on the same pitch earlier in the count when it was an inch closer to the K zone. MLB has to integrate ABS next season people are beyond sick of these primadonna umps.
Better case he signs elsewhere and we get a draft pick that’s much more valuable than what we can get by trading him at the deadline
Re: Mikolas is kicking butt....
He’s struck out less batters and walked more batters this year than the last 2 years.ecleme22 wrote: ↑24 May 2025 17:27 pmOkay, I guess we will see. But he’s given up a lot less hits and less HRs.
A lot of that stems from a .255 BABIP (vs .308 in 2023 and .310 in 2024).
His Barrel% is a career worst 10.8%
His hard hit% is every bit as hard as years past (42%).
His LD% is down (17% vs 21% last 2 years) and his FB% is up (45% vs 36% last year). But his HR/FB is 4.1% vs 12% last year)

This. There's a time & a place for everything & his time & place with the Cardinals is coming to an end. I don't know that it's luck. I think it's just the Waino thing: He's got great stuff sometimes & when he doesn't, he throws BP.
Re: Mikolas is kicking butt....
Also, in the event the cards need to add a starter in 2026, why does it have to be bringing someone back from 2025?jw0595 wrote: ↑24 May 2025 19:51 pmIscoutyjones2 wrote: ↑24 May 2025 08:15 amNooooo! This is his last season as a Card. No mas! Trade him at the deadline if you can

That’s the Mo way of doing things.
Re: Mikolas is kicking butt....
Preseason... my expectation for Mikolas was that he’d almost certainly be gone after 2025.
I still feel that way.
I also expected so-so results for 2025.
So I have to admit that his strong start has me intrigued:
1) He could help them compete for the division.
Or
2) He could raise his trade value come the July deadline!
Either way there is no chance he gets a Qualifying Offer

But —- he’ll be gone at the break, in any event. Time for mcgreevy to come up.
