50 Years Ago Today, June 20 1975

The release of the first Summer Blockbuster. The film that scared millions out of the oceans everywhere. Great casting, great musical score by John Williams, great story ( book by Peter Benchley who appeared in the movie as a TV reporter), great effects using mechanical sharks named Bruce. One of the first films with a "wide release" -350 theaters on day 1. Has made over $1 billion so far.

Agreed. Overall Shaw was brilliant, but when Oscar time rolled around, it was One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest cleaning up. ABC News just did a short promo for "Jaws- 50 Years Later", next month on NatGeo TV. Remember the scene where 2 kids are swimming around with a fake shark fin only to surface and find they're surrounded by rifle wielding police? The 2 kids were brothers and one is now Chief of Police of Martha's Vineyard, where the movie was made.
