Not only NO but H@(( NO!
He was a terrible leader when he was our 1, if he can't lead at the top of the rotation, then how will he lead as a manager.
Waino is a nice guy, he's not a motivator and he's sure as xyz is not going to get in anyones face if they are out of line.

He might be as successful as any former Cardinal great if he would pursue it. He's baseball smart and was a highly respected leader as a player.
How about Burly for player manager Shady? Has any player previously made the Hall of Fame this way? I may be wrong, but I think he would go down as the first to enter the Hall as a double entry. Patiently waiting for your thoughts?
Now you’ve done it…he hadn’t explored that idea yet! If we see hundreds of threads on this, it’s all your fault!
CorneliusWolfe, I apologize in advance! LOL. I was just considering all available options in trying to utilize Burly's unique skill sets. I thought maybe him being the manager would add to his current 5 tools playing acumen.
Hmm….he does have at least 5-tools and is a living legend, so maybe you’re on to something here. Maybe they could fire Bloom and make Burly POBO too so he can rebuild the team in his own image?! Thank you for helping me see the light, I don’t know what came over me!

Shady,
It would have been more intelligent if you had proposed Red Schoendienst and Whitey Herzog as co-managers. They could manage via seance with the current coaches.
Just a thought…

Can’t wait for tomorrows would Jim Edmonds be interested in managing.
Or A. Burleson as Player/Manager

Waino seems like a nice guy and maybe he led by example.
But I never heard that he was a clubhouse leader.
I guess his humor kept things light which is good but that isn't what you need in a manager.

Nah it'll be Big Mac tomorrow. I want to know who was the Holliday boys hitting coach. The Cards need to break the bank to sign that guy
Both McGuire and Holliday would, absolutely, be worth consideration for Cardinals' manager in the future.
You spelled Mark's name incorrectly. Not surprising

A good topic and the sad sacks want to dwell on a mis-spelling. That tells all you need to know about the kind of shallow people they are. Some pretty smart folks. But very shallow, character-wise. Ex. constantly putting others down over trivial things.
3 edits. color me shallow

His fellow broadcasters are regularly surprised by the vapidity of many of his comments - and often correct him on air.
Very good pitcher in his prime.
But he is an 8-count crayon box in a 64-box game.
and during his stretch of years whem he was struggling after the achilles injury, hed always say he wzached film and realized a minor tweal and knew what happened and was confident hed be back to form the mext start- over and over again. i dont trust his assessment abilities. lol
I don't trust his honesty.
He said far too many things about himself over the years that proved to be completely false.
Poor assessment on his part?
Or lack of candor?
His last several years as he struggled there were far too many "AH-HA" moments where he claimed he discovered what he was doing wrong. Example, Adam said he was watching MLB TV and Al Leiter was discussing Adam's curveball. Adam claimed he picked up something from it and his troubles were over. There were plenty other AH HA moments. It got tiresome for me personally

Why not Tom Hanks? He did pretty well managing a bunch of women in A League of Their Own.

Doesn’t strike me as his thing. Plus he’s busy awkwardly singing bad country songs.
Wonder how Wainwright would compare to Matheny and Schumaker as MLB mangers. Wainwright might have the edge in handling pitchers.
The two best managers in the last 60 years were both catchers. Torre and Bochy. They tend to know how to handle pitchers. No two are the same.

As far as managing goes I think he would be very successful...but his private life seems to pop up from time to time...

I can’t see it. Although he helped a number of younger pitchers when they sought him out, he never demonstrated the team-building, leadership characteristics that the position demands.
Let’s just drop it right now.

Frankly, of the former players, Edmonds would be my first choice. Knowledgable, with a little "edge". He would probably get after some players for poor play. #2 would be Pujols. #3 Stubby Clapp.

Shady, serious question. What makes you think that Edmonds "would probably get after some players for poor play"? Why do you say this? Are you basing this claim from his broadcasting time frame? His playing days? Just curious why Edmonds would be the guy to go after players for poor play? Wouldn't any decent manager do the same?

Don't see Waino having much interest in managing. Too much of a commitment at this stage of his life.
