JDW wrote: 13 Jun 2025 09:42 am Although some don't like WAR, especially when it doesn't fit their agenda, it's spot on with Burly this year.
He's also showing so far this year that going by BA is a poor hollow measure to use when looking at just hitting with a player.
AB's current batting line would be very good if he played defense well at a key position like SS, CF or C, but he doesn't/can't/never will.
In addition to being poor defensively in the OF, he also can clog the bases and is vulnerable to the gidp.
Imo he's highly over rated on here, and maybe to a lesser degree still over valued slightly by the league.
Good trade candidate before this year's deadline in my view, and he's lost about 1'/sec. in sprint speed since last year. He's pretty young to already be losing speed, or better said to already becoming even more slow.
Kinda funny, but Ricky commented the other day during a broadcast how Burly wasn't as slow as some people think. Wonder if he was referring to forums like this one, but yeah Ricky, it's a shame measured sprint speed metrics have a conspiracy against Burleson.
Fake sprint speed data Ricky, you'd be the perfect dupe to endorse that idea.

Really hope the Cards retain Contreras for the balance of his contract. He's already a good defensive 1B that has the consistent ability to post +.800 OPS's for a season.
He has a .782 OPS against RHP. That plays.
For someone who is slow and plays spotty defense, a .782 OPS 'plays,' but it doesn't necessarily play everyday.
Agree. He’s a platoon type player.
Yes, but not a straight platoon.
Okay, how about a DH platoon player? Does that pass your test?

Herrera has an .824 OPS vs RHP this year.

Where at, DH? Nah, I'll take Herrera.
When I look at OPS, I don't split it down, instead look at the overall. Why? B/c if a guy has big split differences, if he comes up against the fav matchup when a big situation develops, what's the other manager likely to do? Ummmmm, gee, this hard, wait, oh yeah, bring in a LHP in Burly's case. I don't want a DH that burns up the bench b/c even at his best skill which is marginal, all they have to do is switch pitchers.
Btw, here's Burly's OPS by year: 2022 - 0.535, 2023 - .691, 2024 - .735, and so far in 2025 - .753.
Nice trend. Will the .753 so far hold thru the grind?
Which comes first, Burly eventually trends up to a .800 OPS season or age regression sets in?

In your estimation, what are the biggest problems on this team?

Ha.
Not calling him a bum and never have, that's on you, and I hope he can keep trending better, but to ever be more than be a bench player I've consistently have posted on here he'll need to be +.800 OPS guy with his other limitations.
He did post a +1.2 bWAR last year, which is a good for a bench player, but I hope the Cards FO strives to have at least +3.0 bWAR capable guys for their starting positions.

Tourette's? Don't know how the "Reply Function" works? Or are you purposefully trolling by not using it? Keep the conversation rolling, use the Reply Function. Your post will stand out on its own if it's worth it.

No one knows who you're replying to, and you disrupt the convo if anyone is trying to read it later.
