I remember telling my wife that season that I'd never seen anything like it, and to enjoy it because I never will again, a team that just goes out and wins, to the point that if they lose it's a surprise. Night after night. What a machine. If the Red Sox hadn't been on some kind of mssion from God we might have won the WS. I truly think that's the only team that could have beaten us, and we' have beaten them if they hadn't just come off a miracle comeback against the Yanks.
Didn't they also mess with the Cardinals hotel arrangements?
Putting them well outside Boston in a hotel that didn't have food service after 10 pm?
I know MLB, after that little piece of shennagans (sic), took hotel arrangements away from the home team.
I can vaguely recall hearing something about that at the time. Wouldn't surprise me. The reservations wre probably made by the guy in charge of snow ploughs.
At least those Bostonians couldn't mess w/our BLUES!
1995 Cleveland Indians got hosed on that list, probably because they only played 144 games that year. That team is probably the best I ever saw to not win it all.
The mid to late 90s Indians teams are some of the best talents ever compiled by one team. They were loaded.
Yeah, they were almost Mozeliak good for about 7 years, almost. But just like the Cards the fans stopped supporting the club as much and they fell apart. Think they had the record for a while with 455 sellouts in a row during those days. Cards had a better run. Would be real nice if Walker and Gorman became Manny Ramirez and Jim Thome, Winn and Herrera became Sandy Alomar and Omar Vizquel, Donavan Bearga, VS2 Lofton etc.

I lived in Akron in the '90s. Those Indian teams were offensive juggernauts, but the GM, whose name I can't remember, could not put together a solid pitching staff.
They were outstanding. Team WAR was #2 (47.4) behind the Red Sox (53.6).
Great lineup. #1 in the NL in runs scored.
Three GGs (Jimmy, Rolen and Matheny).
Four starters with over 15 Ws and one at 11.
Incredible BP with Izzy, King, Kline, Kiko Calero Taveras and Eldred.
The weakness was the bench, with only Larry Walker a threat.
Catcher had great defense but awful offense with Matheny (who won GG) catching 2/3rds of games.
Note: the great 2005 team was 4th in WAR at 46.7, hurt by the fact that Rolen only had 222 ABs.

“Just like the Cards the fans stopped supporting the club…”
Only someone with no grasp of reality would blame the FANS for the Cardinals’ downturn.

Reading the OP's description of 2004 really made me think about 1985. Won 101 compared to '04's 105. Started slow, didn't reach .500 until late May, then kicked butt in June, July, and September.
Since the Divisions era, Cardinals have won 100 games in 4 seasons, and haven't won the WS in any of them.

I think the 2004 team were a monster because they they were 53 games over .500 there last 122.
That’s like an average of nearly 10 over .500 the last four months, give or take.

Yes, that has been confirmed.
Yet another reason why I cannot stand Boston. All too happy to play up them as the David to the Yankees' Goliath. Ignoring the fact that they speny just as wildly as those Yankee teams did.
I thought so, thx for the backup strummer
Toss in steroid freak D. Ortiz and M. Ramirez on that 2004 team as well.
Bunch of cheaters.
Exacty...huge bunch of cheaters....and Ortiz is in the hall of fame...what a joke....

Seeing that the Cardinals managed to go about 3 weeks without losing 2 consecutive games, I decided to go back and observe some things about the 2004 Cardinals.
From May 27 (23-22) to Sept 7 (92-44) was an incredible run
They lost consecutive games only 4 times during this stretch. They lost only 3 series.
They had two 6 game winning streaks, three 5 game winning streaks, a 7 game winning streak, an 8 game winning streak, and a 9 game winning streak.
19-9 June
20-5 July (.800)
21-7 August (.750)
It was about the hottest team we've seen.
The only detraction maybe was that they really beat up on Cincy and Pittsburgh all summer long. Anyway, the only team that actually won their season series against the Cardinals was Houston.
Had C. Carpenter (who we now know was an absolute beast) not gone down w/a season ending injury before the playoffs, then (IMO) they beat the Dead Sox.
No way in h e l l he'd have lost that Game 1.
That! Plus, didn’t Morris run out of gas at the end?

He did, just looked it up and he had a 5.23 ERA in September.

I say again. Never led one complete inning in 36 played. Give that some thought. This is supposed to be the greatest team most of us have seen- never led an inning.
Were the Sox that dominant. No I say.
Cards were handicapped going into the WS. I didn't see the Gas House Gang play, but saw all the 60s teams forward. 2004 was the most dominate team. They toyed with people. Rested the last week or would have set the wins record.
