I was praying we'd play that Yankees' squad and their weak starting pitching (Big names, Bad stats) and poor pen' (Mariano/Flash Gordon aside).
2004 Cardinals would've beaten the Yankees in the WS............again!

Didn't they also mess with the Cardinals hotel arrangements?BrummerStealsHome wrote: ↑22 May 2025 11:32 am I remember telling my wife that season that I'd never seen anything like it, and to enjoy it because I never will again, a team that just goes out and wins, to the point that if they lose it's a surprise. Night after night. What a machine. If the Red Sox hadn't been on some kind of mssion from God we might have won the WS. I truly think that's the only team that could have beaten us, and we' have beaten them if they hadn't just come off a miracle comeback against the Yanks.
I still liken it to Return of the King winning the BP Oscar instead of Fellowship of the Ring.Ronnie Dobbs wrote: ↑22 May 2025 09:50 am Best team I've ever seen. I think 2006 was somehow fate's way to make up for the fact that we didn't win the World Series that year.
I just pulled up that team's fangraphs page. I completely forgot that Dave Winfield, Brian Giles, and Jeromy Burnitz were on that team in very small roles.Ike Hammett wrote: ↑22 May 2025 13:25 pm Definitely one of the better teams to never win the World Series. They make the list.

1995 Cleveland Indians got hosed on that list, probably because they only played 144 games that year. That team is probably the best I ever saw to not win it all.
Yes, that has been confirmed.rockondlouie wrote: ↑22 May 2025 11:47 amDidn't they also mess with the Cardinals hotel arrangements?BrummerStealsHome wrote: ↑22 May 2025 11:32 am I remember telling my wife that season that I'd never seen anything like it, and to enjoy it because I never will again, a team that just goes out and wins, to the point that if they lose it's a surprise. Putting them well outside Boston in a hotel that didn't have food service after 10 pm?
I know MLB, after that little piece of shennagans (sic), took hotel arrangements away from the home team.
The mid to late 90s Indians teams are some of the best talents ever compiled by one team. They were loaded.Ike Hammett wrote: ↑22 May 2025 13:25 pm Definitely one of the better teams to never win the World Series. They make the list.

Yeah, they didn't spend on par with the Yankees, not even close, but they were still a goliath to the other 28 teams in the league. It's not like they were the Oakland A's.Strummer Jones wrote: ↑22 May 2025 14:04 pmYes, that has been confirmed.rockondlouie wrote: ↑22 May 2025 11:47 amDidn't they also mess with the Cardinals hotel arrangements?BrummerStealsHome wrote: ↑22 May 2025 11:32 am I remember telling my wife that season that I'd never seen anything like it, and to enjoy it because I never will again, a team that just goes out and wins, to the point that if they lose it's a surprise. Yet another reason why I cannot stand Boston. All too happy to play up them as the David to the Yankees' Goliath. Ignoring the fact that they speny just as wildly as those Yankee teams did.

Yankees in 2004 outspent every team in MLB by a mile: $184Mrbirules wrote: ↑22 May 2025 14:12 pmYeah, they didn't spend on par with the Yankees, not even close, but they were still a goliath to the other 28 teams in the league. Toss in steroid freak D. Ortiz and M. Ramirez on that 2004 team as well.

Brian Giles is one of the most forgotten players in history. Look at that ops and ops+. That's what we need right now from Walker or Gorman. Don't forget my guy Eddie Murray one of the most forgotten players ever also (for a hall of famer). Couldn't believe the Braves got them that year. Saw them both on the same day that year in 1995 in LA. Indians smoked the Angels in the day game, Braves beat the Dodgers 1-0 that night. Best day ever!rbirules wrote: ↑22 May 2025 13:55 pmI just pulled up that team's fangraphs page. I forgot that Belle became the first player with 50 HRs and 50 doubles in the same season in a shortened season. I was thinking he did it in 1996, not 1995. He almost did it again in 1998, but baseball was following a different HR chase that year.
I can vaguely recall hearing something about that at the time. Wouldn't surprise me. The reservations wre probably made by the guy in charge of snow ploughs.rockondlouie wrote: ↑22 May 2025 11:47 amDidn't they also mess with the Cardinals hotel arrangements?BrummerStealsHome wrote: ↑22 May 2025 11:32 am I remember telling my wife that season that I'd never seen anything like it, and to enjoy it because I never will again, a team that just goes out and wins, to the point that if they lose it's a surprise.
