He’s coming up on 36…..easy to understand he might want an opportunity to win…

Although that 35 mil he is owed next year will scare a lot of teams off…
Bet if the Reds wanted him ( was with them previously ) he would waive to them as he previously has said the reason he signed with Cardinals was that St. Louis wasn't too far from his Nashville area home. Cincy would be even closer .
Cincinnati is indeed closer to Nashville, by a whole 15 miles.

Though I honestly trust the Cardinals to be more of a contender and spend money than I do Cincinnati.
A Mapquest I used had 42 miles closer but either way just a bit closer. Atlanta is also closer than St.Louis to Sonny’s home.
They are not currently in the hunt though.

Gray has been very clear he has zero interest in playing far from home.
The currently contending teams who could afford him happen to be in the very locations in which he has no interest.
He goes nowhere at the deadline.
I mean, the Cardinals could afford to pay down his salary especially if it increased the return on the package. But DeWitt won't do that.

There’s Always Next Year…..
The context of the OP doesn't say when Sonny said this. He might have said it before the season began. So, he might believe in this team...
I saw that. Kratz wasn't quoting Sonny Gray, he was speculating.
I’m sure it was but I was thinking Kratz as a former catcher maybe used to play with Sonny and may have talked to him. I think it is unlikely he is traded but if the Cards are out of the race closer to the deadline maybe. I guess it depends on what’s more important to him, a chance for a ring or play out his remaining years close to home. I think it is the latter.

fastest way to put 2026 season in the toilet? Does anyone see the cards signing two number 2 type starters in off season if they trade Gray?

What part of contender led you to the Braves?
If they can get their pitching in order, they could go on a run. The offense is good enough.
