He's become the best hitter on the team and his stock is still on the upswing.
I'd have no issue seeing him get a $90-100M/5 yr deal w/a sixth year mutual option.![]()

I love Burleson and his bat. His defense stinks. Well below average.OldRed wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 08:48 amI also believe he improved at first base also. I like watching him bat because he hits so many pitches that aren't strikes. The home run yesterday was a pitch out of the strike zone.ggnoobs wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 08:43 am I think the Cardinals real competitive window will open in 2028, and I think you want Burly for that window. As it is 2028 would be his walk year. I think sign him through 2031 and then let him walk at 32 years old. He's only gotten better each of the previous few seasons. The guy can just plain hit and I think you want/need him to be in the lineup when the window opens.
5/100?
I agree on 4 or 5 years on a contract.

Burly is a solid defensive 1st baseman.
You guys should have listened to Shady about Burly/Baez!

For perspective, Josh Naylor signed a 5/$92.5m this offseason for his ages 29-33 seasons. Biggest difference being that was a FA contract where a potential Burly extension would cover 2 remaining Arb years - which should lower the overall guarantee IMO.ggnoobs wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 08:43 am I think the Cardinals real competitive window will open in 2028, and I think you want Burly for that window. Yeah it’s his main weakness, but it does seem like he’s marginally improved against lefties since the ASB.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 11:58 am+1 if he could just be bad instead of helpless against lefties or mediocre against lefties he would be an MVP
First half wRC+: 47 in 119 PAs
Second half wRC+: 80 in 40 PAs
Hopefully he continues to improve.

Literally every single defensive metric available says he’s a below-average defender. Just saying he’s good because he makes plays a 1B is supposed to make doesn’t change that. Maybe you should watch some other teams and you’d see he’s not as good as most 1B defensively.Ace Hollister wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 11:55 amTell me you haven’t played baseball wo saying it!Cardinals1964 wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 11:44 amI love Burleson and his bat. This is likely true but he doesn't cost you games so can we just forget about the defense. He is the most consistent offensive threat for the last three years in a team that has struggled to find that. Also he has definitely made some good scoops and plays at first and we can't pretend that didn't happen just because of the metrics.Horseradish wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 12:14 pmLiterally every single defensive metric available says he’s a below-average defender. I have to say at the beginning of the year I would’ve said no way. I would’ve said that we need to extend Herrera and try to trade Burleson, but I think I got that one wrong, and I’m thinking Herrera is the guy that we should look to trade and Burleson the guy to extend.

Re: I think you have to lock Burly up for ~5 years
I wouldn’t trade either of them. The reason burly and walker have so many RBIs is because JJ and Herrera are running up counts and getting on base. I wouldn’t mess with the 1-5 now that Baez is here. The 1-4 has been the strength of the team and driving the offense all season. As for burly yea sign him his defense isn’t great but he’s far from a disaster and the bat more than playsRonnie Dobbs wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 13:43 pm I have to say at the beginning of the year I would’ve said no way. If you're worried about his defense with an OPS of .850 then you should start posting on a board with a different sport.

Uh no, I don’t just forget about defense just because someone is a good hitter. His limited range and slow reaction on balls hit near him might have cost runs that you’re choosing to ignore, but that is your prerogative. No one is ignoring his scoops, but most ML 1B make those plays.TopofthePerch wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 12:42 pmThis is likely true but he doesn't cost you games so can we just forget about the defense. None of that would scare me from extending him though, good player, just need to be honest about who he is.

Re: I think you have to lock Burly up for ~5 years
Yea, I may be getting ahead of myself there, and I really like Herrera, but I’m thinking that Rainiel Rodriguez is going to be in the majors next year, and it’s going to be a lot sooner than Baez was this year. It seems like between Herrera, Burleson, Crooks, Bernal, and RR, we are going to be pretty crowded at catcher, 1B, and DH, and all those guys need as many ABs as they can get. I think that the team should at least be exploring the idea this offseason. Especially if he continues to hitting like he has this year, rather than he did last year.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 14:00 pmI wouldn’t trade either of them. No I'm talking to those (bleep) about something that is miniscule when looking at players with those numbers offensively.Horseradish wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 14:14 pmI don’t see anyone “worried” here, so you’re talking to yourself.11WSChamps wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 14:04 pm If you're worried about his defense with an OPS of .850 then you should start posting on a board with a different sport.
