I think you have to lock Burly up for ~5 years
I think the Cardinals real competitive window will open in 2028, and I think you want Burly for that window. As it is 2028 would be his walk year. I think sign him through 2031 and then let him walk at 32 years old. He's only gotten better each of the previous few seasons. The guy can just plain hit and I think you want/need him to be in the lineup when the window opens.

With salaries being as crazy as they are hard to put a finger on the numbers but yes they need to extend him in the off season.ggnoobs wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 08:43 am I think the Cardinals real competitive window will open in 2028, and I think you want Burly for that window. I also believe he improved at first base also. I like watching him bat because he hits so many pitches that aren't strikes. The home run yesterday was a pitch out of the strike zone.ggnoobs wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 08:43 am I think the Cardinals real competitive window will open in 2028, and I think you want Burly for that window. I agree on 4 or 5 years on a contract.

Not fully opened, but enough to feel the breeze blowing.
As for an extension with Burleson, he has a say in the matter.
And the year he is producing, he may have cause to decline any such conversation with FA just 2 seasons away.
One thing is certain.
The starting price for the dialogue has risen exponentially over the past 4 months.

The Cardinals have something now they haven't had in the past; a player may want to stay here because they can see a strong future with the bulk of the team being pretty much the same.Melville wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 08:52 amThe window is open now.ggnoobs wrote: ↑17 Aug 2026 08:43 am I think the Cardinals real competitive window will open in 2028, and I think you want Burly for that window. He's headed into his age 28 season
He's become the best hitter on the team and his stock is still on the upswing.
I'd have no issue seeing him get a $90-100M/5 yr deal w/a sixth year mutual option.

If we lock up burly the core is going to be a big core
1) Wetherholt
2) Herrera
3) Burleson
4) Walker
5) Rodriquez
6) Baez
7) Baez
Pete ?
9) Winn
Should be beautiful with a major focus on perfecting the pitching staff being our biggest objective and hurdle.

I wish Burly hit LH pitching better, but he’d still be worth the contract extension. I’d like to see Herrera or Bernal play 1B against LH SP’s though.
