Cant. So which way do you go
For a late season DH with Cincy I'll go with the group--as a manager I'd start the regular SP in the first game. I might give it more thought if the match-up were more crucial, like top spot in the NLC up for grabs.

I can see any pitcher having a preference for a night game. Cooler, worse visibility for hitters, more wear on the opps.

I would have started Wilbur Wood. He was used to that
Wilbur was durable as hell but the only time he started both games of a DH he got badly knocked around.

otoh, my man Joe McGinnity once started both DH games three times in a single month, and won all six games. Every one a complete game, too.

That would be my guess, Quinn pitches one and maybe Libby the other one. If Libby fails then Quinn steps into his rotation spot. Only problem is I think tomorrow is Libby's day

Pallante will pitch Game 1 in Cincy, and probably Matthews in Game 2.

Pallante's stats against Reds are plus, plus

He pitches well in Cincy.

Believe it or not.

Pallante only only sub 5 IP start came against Cubs i believe. Out of 23 starts.

Our last series with Cubs. If he pitches in cincy, does the outcome of the Cub series determine game 1 or 2.

Ok the scenerio deepens. The Cards have tomorrow’s starters as TBA.

The Cub series is 1-1. With Dobbins today. Does a cub win move tomorrow’s needle reference who starts.
What about a rain out today?

Does that push Dobbins to start game one? I thought the board wanted Pallante game 1.

Thoughts.

For sure you throw your "regular" rotation starter in game 1 w/the hopes he goes at least five + and you have pen' arms available then for game 2.

Likely a moot point as I expect "Q" to get called up to pitch one of the games.

Heres one. We play a DH in Cincinnati on Monday the 17th. 1240 and 540 game times.

Chances are one of the games will be a pen game, or a Q game, or something in between.

The other game will be pitched by one of the regular starters. Question.

If you were the regular starter, which game would you want.
From a managing perspective, I'd probably want the regular starter to go first and have the pen game second. If the starter does really well game one, that open up more options for game two
I agree also managers usually start their regulars in the first game and a couple of bench players in the second game so the second games lineup usually isn’t as strong giving the weaker pitcher a better chance of winning than pitching the first game
Considering the heat, waning daylight, tired starting players. All for second game. Your position isn’t to give the better pitcher the additional advantage, but to give the lessor pitcher a better chance.

So first game- starter.
I think they start Matthew’s first. Is that going against the grain.

Many here thought Pallante would go game one. Why? Then, now that hes not, why?

Where is the strategy. Did the Cub series win change the process/ direction

I’ll write the script.

Does a Matthew’s win with Pallante for the sweep more optimistic than the other way around. Or does Pallante get the he nod against a pen game?

Loss. If we lose game one, is Pallante the band aid? If Pallante loses game one, too much pressure for Matthew’s in game two?

Thoughts.

If I were a starter I'd want game 2. Why? Because if I were a starter I'd have a complete game mentality. I'd tell the manager, "use the bullpen at will in game 1 and I'll mow 'em down in game 2." That not only exudes confidence but it provides even more self-motivation.

If you need confidence from bravado and scenarios mentioned, i think you have a confidence problem.

It isn't a question of need, but a natural mental technique of athletes to increase their edge.

They used to say about Allen Watson that if he’s given a big league, he loses focus.

If you need to be in a tight game or pitch knowing the bullpen is gassed, then you are not a mentally tough pitcher…
