But I thought Hence was one of the premium young talents in the Cards organization? What happened? He was going to be with the mythical juggernaut that they're going to build from cost controlled minor league players. Just shows the whole lose, draft, lose, draft blah blah is untenable. Some young players here and there can really fit in and help but they shouldn't be the only focus when competing. You build a team with known talent and fill in the gaps with young talent. You don't build a team with young talent and fill in the gaps with veterans, especially waiver wire veterans. Then when a young star transcends, you open a spot for him by trading someone blocking him. I know it might seem like semantics but one way gives you the chance to compete year in and year out, the other way involves tons of losing.
You have to start with young talent. In mlb, AAA and in down.
Once you do that, you bring in’premium’ talent and veterans.
Right now, we are doing the former. The latter will eventually happen.

webhave 7 daysnto trade hence before dfaing so he likely is an addon in trade, but he really doesnt have any value. he has had 6 years in minors and now his velocity is down 8mph from what it usednto be topping out at 90mph. hes toast.

Let's be honest here. Every frigging team in baseball has young talented prospects. Every teams rankings fluctuates constantly. A team is rated highly and then a couple of high prospects fizzle out for what ever reason. Some fairly obscure prospects elevate and become viable MLB players. No one knows for sure, it's one big gamble. They just signed JJ to a long term deal expecting him to play well and improve. What if he doesn't? Now, you expect to build a team of highly volatile minor league prospects and then you want them to be coached properly while them navigating the minors and their personal lives, oh and you expect them to arrive at about the same time. Unlikely scenario, but then to top it off, only then do you want to go out and spend some money on premium talent, assuming said talent is even available and amenable to coming to the armpit of America? Tell me, does this premise sound like fantasy land to you? Or, follow me here, or you could spend up to the level you're capable of and put premium talent on the field for people to watch and cheer on, supplement it with talent from the minors (where applicable) and compete every year for a shot at the playoffs. Or you could try the fantasy land style and wallow in years or more of losing like Cincy and Pitt have done. All to save the owners a few quid.
