Why else would he pitch Gastulum in back to back 10th innings, he could have strategically walked PCA last night (burned him) and he basically implies that the moves are meant to created opps where more strategy would be involved

Don't score and then your forced to remove Velasquez for a no hit defensive catcher in Pages.

Fast forward to bottom of the 10th down 4-2. One out and Walker on 2nd, you now have to pinch hit Crooks a LH batter for Pages. Cubs counter with a relief pitcher, Crooks flies out. They get Noot for out 3.

Velasquez is on this roster for one reason, to hit! Not to pinch run.

That's one way to look at it .. You didn't want to put a guy who ran better than Herrera to give you better odds of scoring on a base hit in bottom of 8th.. get the run IN and then you hold Cubs in top of the 9th and win the game. Oli is trying to win the game by giving himself the best odds of scoring right then in 8th rather than 'saving' a pinch hitter type guy for extra innniugs etc. He didn't score in the 8th but won't criticize him for trying to take the lead in last of the 8th and holding Cubs scoreless in 9th .

You don't remove one of your best hitters for Nelson Velazquez to PINCH RUN. Herrera is not that slow and what you MIGHT gain in speed (which is questionable at best), you lose if you don't get that run in there. There are some players you cannot remove. Herrera would've had a chance to win the game in the 10th again, but instead Marmol burns NV, Pages, and Crooks all because he couldn't let Herrera run.

Beyond stupid.

This is why I said two years ago rebuild or not you want a leader creating a culture conducive to winning so when the talent does arrive you don't have to start the process of building a foundation all over again with a different manager.

Details conducive to winning, a culture where winning is the goal and whether the players going thriugh this process are talented enough are not never let on it isn't the ultimate goal.
