I'd like to get him and bring in his old man as either hitting coach or manager. The young players need to be coached by someone who has prospered at the major league level. The Cardinals have so many exemplary retired players who the players might listen to. Evidently, they aren't listening to Brandt Brown, or they are listening and it isn't working.
Of course there is a huge erection from the fans because Matt Holliday is associated.
If you own a struggling business or purchase one, you're most likely to bring in a turnaround expert (Bloom) and let that expert bring in his team that has helped him prosper in the past. If that team isn't available, you bring in the best and the brightest and turn the culture around. Young ballplayers are having so much nonsense laid upon them. Launch angle, exit velocity yada yada yada. Meanwhile they don't understand basic hitting principles. They take fastballs right down the middle and fall behind 0-2,1-2 then get fooled by a breaking ball in the dirt when the whole universe knows that a breaking ball is coming. Young players are more likely to listen to proven Hall of Famers who have done it then a Brandt Brown or Oli Marmol who has never competed at the top level of the game. Matt Holliday is a Cards Hall of Famer whom I would welcome. Same for Pujols, Molina, Edmonds, Simmons and others.

What is the story with Holliday at this point. Some around the game talk about him like he's a bust already. Let's see, last season he wasn't terrible in just his second season. This year, he was derailed by the hamate injury early on that could have affected him still into the season. Coming up, he was a SS but has primarily played 2B.

So is he actually going to be good, or does he just have a name because of who his dad was. Or, is he a case like Jordan Walker waiting to have a breakout at some point.
Interesting post and premise. I don’t think the timing is right, unless a great opportunity falls in our lap. Bloom, Cerfolio and Pierpont seem committed to restocking our minor leagues with high ceiling pitching prospects. A move like this would subtract from the very asset we are gathering. Maybe in a couple years…..
I'm moreso shocked at the idea of the O's moving on, than the idea of us getting him.

As another poster stated the O's are a puzzling franchise. They shouldn't be giving up on certain young players just yet. But they've had two disappointing seasons in a row, so it makes one curious what they might do to try and overcorrect if they get emotional.
They need to figure out how to get Gunnar Henderson back on track. 20 bWAR the last 3 years combined to just 1.3 through 107 games in 2026.
Henderson has 2 seasons on record of ~70 XBH or more, and is only 25. That's a much different situation of what Holliday is in. In Henderson's case, you'd almost be more surprised if he doesn't return to that previous form. Holliday is yet to fully prove it.
Yes, but he’s been a big part of why they’ve been disappointing this year. Heck if he was even like last year (and he wasn’t great hitting wise last year) they’re probably leading the AL WC right now. They’re only 2.5 back of a WC spot with as disappointing of a year as they’ve gotten from the offense. I’ve seen a number of Orioles fans on twitter wanting them to deal Henderson. Say he doesn’t want to be there. I guess they’ve got people there like CT.
Well, and you've got Braves fans who have been trying to cast off Acuna forever as well...
That I’m not surprised about. He’s played in 100+ games 2 times in the last 6 years.

I even saw the same attitude recently about Austin Riley. "Get rid of him." What, just a couple years ago they were crying because they thought he got snubbed of an MVP (which was very funny).

That’s what happens when you go from an .897 OPS in 2023 to a .644 OPS in 2026. He wasn’t good last year either, he was solid in 2024. I don’t know what happened to him, but he’s definitely fallen off quicker than I would have thought. He’s only 29 years old.

Holliday’s .756 OPS/114 OPS+ would be the 3rd highest on the team right now behind Walker and Burly. It’s better than Herrera (.739/111) and Wetherholt (.742/111).
Would you trade Herrera for Jackson Holliday?

Maybe, but I still think the injuries are the biggest driving factor. Think about how there are many on here who hate Nootbaar or to go back further J.D. Drew because they were/are hurt so much. Now put that on a player that is supposed to be an elite player. And one who’s had a sub .800 OPS in 3 of the last 5 years.

Again, Drew never had a season with less than 100 games played with St. Louis. Acuna has done that 4 of the last 6 years.

Double yes.

Do due diligence on the hand and making the throw from 3B. But the defensive fit and Cardinal catching glut just makes sense.

The Os have had so much young catching in recent years. What happened to it? Why was Pozo starting the other day?

Maybe, but I still think the injuries are the biggest driving factor. Think about how there are many on here who hate Nootbaar or to go back further J.D. Drew because they were/are hurt so much. Now put that on a player that is supposed to be an elite player. And one who’s had a sub .800 OPS in 3 of the last 5 years.

Again, Drew never had a season with less than 100 games played with St. Louis. Acuna has done that 4 of the last 6 years.
Good comp. And similar to the Drew situation, Atlanta would probably be wise to look for the right opportunity to cash in on the final year or whatever of Acuna trade value. Turn over their roster a bit. If healthy he would be just what the doctor ordered for some teams.

Holliday’s .756 OPS/114 OPS+ would be the 3rd highest on the team right now behind Walker and Burly. It’s better than Herrera (.739/111) and Wetherholt (.742/111).
Would you trade Herrera for Jackson Holliday?
yes
Double yes.

Do due diligence on the hand and making the throw from 3B. But the defensive fit and Cardinal catching glut just makes sense.

The Os have had so much young catching in recent years. What happened to it? Why was Pozo starting the other day?
Rutschman and Basallo are out with dufferent injuries. 10-Day IL, mid august return fur both at best. Basallo just signed a big extension as their top catching prospect.

They drafted Ike Irish and Cardin Bodine last year. They traded Bodine to the Rays. Irish was playing 1B/ OF before a meniscus tear that ended his 2026 season.

They currently have Chadwick Tromo and Yohel Pozo as their starting catchers right now.

Herrera would fit nicely as a stopgap. But long term would be backup catcher 1B/DH for them, similar to where it's heading with the Cardinals.

Herrera for Holliday is an interesting trade idea. I actually think Herrera may be the better hitter, but Holliday would be a better fit if he could play 3B. That said, I'm pretty sure he has a below average arm even at SS, so 3B probably wouldn't be a good option. Maybe 2B with JJ at 3rd but I would hate to move JJ at this point.

It'd be great to have him anchoring 3B. Though gotta give to get. Calculate well.
Rodriguez would be a hard no in that type of deal.

Orioles would laugh if Herrera was the only offer. Gonna need more than that.

Holliday might be available for pennies on the dollar

Take a flyer it won’t cost much imho - Orioles are down on him right now
