The Cardinals -- who have the top catching prospect in MLB (Rainiel Rodriguez) at Double-A and another of their Top 5 prospects (Leo Bernal) at Triple-A -- could also be open to moving one of their catchers, likely either Pedro Pagés or Iván Herrera, per sources

I’m all for trading basically anyone, depending on the return, but I would hope that they would be very cautious trading a guy like Herrera.
To me, out of that group, Pages would be the obvious guy.

I dont see any decent club trading for Pages he doesnt move the needle. IH on the other hand does, if they trade a catcher IMO itll be IH and NOT Pages.

Can the Cardinals afford to further weaken their already poor offense?
Trading Nootbar would be hoping that Baez can become an MLB average hitter quickly.
Trading Herrera would be hoping that Crooks can become an MLB average hitter quickly. So far, he hasn't been able to hit as well as Pages.

Re: First Herrera report I’ve seen
I think if they trade IH its got to be for an overpay. It seems to me that IH would be part of the 2 year plan, but without a position on this team, maybe they dont serm him ad an intricate piece.

Re: First Herrera report I’ve seen
Trading Herrera is the logical move at this point. Haven't we seen enough guys that were supposed to be the next big thing sit and stew for years producing nothing? His numbers do not lie. He is nothing special at this point other than another catcher we have plenty of and a lot of potential. Sell high.

Another perspective from Ray Mileur

The Armchair GM - One small Cardinals-Athletics transaction may be worth a second look.
The Cardinals just traded right-hander Scott Blewett to the Athletics for cash considerations after designating him for assignment earlier in the week. On its own, that is a routine roster move. A depth arm changes organizations, the Cardinals clear the spot, and Oakland adds pitching inventory.
But timing matters.
The Athletics also just lost All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers to a torn meniscus, an injury that could cost him the rest of the season and likely removes him from the trade market.
That changes the catching conversation in Oakland.
And it makes me wonder if the Blewett deal was the only conversation going on between these two clubs.
The Cardinals have catching depth. That is not really up for debate.
At the big-league level, they have Iván Herrera, Pedro Pagés and organizational flexibility. In the system, they have Jimmy Crooks, Leo Bernal and Rainiel Rodriguez, who may be the most important catching prospect in the organization.
That does not mean the Cardinals should start handing catchers away.
Quite the opposite.
Catching depth is one of the hardest things to build in baseball, and the Cardinals have spent years trying to get to this point. But when another organization suddenly loses an All-Star catcher and is already talking with you on a smaller deal, it is fair to wonder whether the conversation could expand.
The A’s may need catching help.
The Cardinals need pitching.
That is where an Armchair GM starts connecting dots.
Could Oakland have interest in a catcher from the Cardinals system? Could St. Louis use that depth to pry loose an arm or another controllable piece? Could a minor transaction be the doorway to a larger baseball conversation?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
But this is the time of year when one phone call often leads to another.
The Blewett deal by itself is not a blockbuster.
But with Langeliers hurt, Oakland’s catching situation has changed.
And when a team with catching depth is already talking to a team that suddenly needs catching, it is at least worth watching.

Re: First Herrera report I’ve seen
Let's face it, it looks like he is a slightly above average hitter who doesn't really have a position. Is Herrera even a 50 grade player right now.
Maybe this deadline gives an opportunity to cash in on more than 15.8, as it is a sellers market and a couple of teams will be looking for right handed offense. NYY, PHI, Seattle... I'm sure there's more.
I've considered Herrera a good hitter but I've pointed out in the past Jose Martinez an example of how quickly the trade value goes away if a player like this stops hitting.

Re: First Herrera report I’ve seen
There's also like at least 6-7 teams looking for catchers right now. Someone might be willing to make him more of a full time catcher. He's not bad outside of the throwing part of catching. And for as bad as Herrera is, Pages has given up more steals (35 to 27) and nearly double the SB attempts (52 to 28) in 7 more starts than Herrera.C-Unit wrote: ↑28 Jul 2026 18:16 pmLet's face it, it looks like he is a slightly above average hitter who doesn't really have a position. Re: First Herrera report I’ve seen
Herrera is currently having a down season. I think he has been trying to hit for more power and it has hurt him.
However, he still had been hovering around a .400 OB%, and scored a lot of runs.
Yet several people on here claim he is nothing and so let’s hurry up and trade him. If he was nothing, why would other teams be calling about him.
If many of the Posters on here are truly Cardinals fans, then I’d have to rethink the notion that supposedly says, Cardinals fans are the best in baseball! Then again, I guess all teams have their share of Idiots!
