Re: Encouraged by players but discouraged by the coaching
Exactly. Oli isn't a miracle worker.
Take yesterday. As good as Leahy was, he only went 6 innings. He used two of his better relievers to get to the 9th. O'Brien was sick, so he had to throw Soriano in the 9th. Graceffo threw a bunch of pitches the day before. That left Bruihl and Svanson. Both suck, but he's gotta use one of them. I guess he could have thrown one of them in the 7th-9th, but we probably just lose the game earlier and people are mad because he didn't go to his best relievers first to try and win the game.
And it's been like that all year. He has starters that struggle to go 6 innings and a bad bullpen. That's going to cause problems if you're Oli Marmol or Casey Stengel.

IF we go to point in history where they succeeded on a more regular basis look at why that
was. The NYY and Cards benefited greatly by being national teams and were magnets for
players trying out for the team. Those teams were able to take the cream of the crop as well
as more scouting and a minor league system.
The MLB draft started in 1965, I believe. The Cards lost a part of their advantage but were
able to ride the prior advantages for awhile.
Today we bemoan teams that have an advantage. We should at least acknowledge that
St. Louis once had more than one advantage. Now we clamor to even a playing.
IMO, we need to understand that this current disadvantage is real and any future long run
unless you possess that advantage isn't likely. Win a WS is possible. A long
run seems unrealistic without an advantage for it's so rare for a team in the past or now.

Bloom’s hands may be tied as far as the manager goes.Melville wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 21:05 pmSpot.Galatians221jb1 wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 20:46 pm We are building something worth while on the field and at the plate. First, second, SS, RF and hopefully promising players at 3rd and CF. Pitching has promise in Pallante, Leahy and McG.
But seeing Winn continue to slide his anchor foot backwards when swinging and seeing so many first pitch grooved fastballs let go while getting behind in the count along with flamethrowers who have mediocre at best control seems to me to be a team crying for better coaching.
I’m somewhat encouraged by Bloom except for his evident trust in Kukla, Fran and Oli. This team is in need of experienced, proven hitting, pitching coaches and a proven manager. Can’t understand why Bloom puts up with some of this.
On.
So why does he?
He was ordered to do so by DeWitt.
That is the only logical conclusion.

Love the Kukla, Fran and Ollie reference. Loved them as a kid. Hell, I used to watch the test pattern before cartoons came on on Saturdays at 7:00 a.m.
Oops ! My apologies to Clarabell , the clown for missing him !

You don’t think it’s possible BDW told Bloom that Oli is his guy and he wants him kept? I’m not saying that happened, but you don’t think that’s within the realm of possibility?riff raff wrote: ↑27 Jul 2026 18:43 pmrightthinker4 wrote: ↑27 Jul 2026 15:18 pmBloom’s hands may be tied as far as the manager goes.Melville wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 21:05 pmSpot.Galatians221jb1 wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 20:46 pm We are building something worth while on the field and at the plate. Not arguing but in my mind it defies sound business logic that DeWitt became a billionaire investor by hiring inexperienced, unproven people to build his business. His Arby’s franchise has to be run by experienced managers from the fast food business. After LaRussa, he has hired three unproven managers. When Schildt began to flourish he let Mo can him. Hard to be impressed with DeWitt.Melville wrote: ↑27 Jul 2026 18:35 pmThere is no doubt of that fact.rightthinker4 wrote: ↑27 Jul 2026 15:18 pmBloom’s hands may be tied as far as the manager goes.Melville wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 21:05 pmSpot.Galatians221jb1 wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 20:46 pm We are building something worth while on the field and at the plate. The Marmot has been employed in one way or another by the organization pretty much since he was a child.
That means something to a man like DeWitt who is famous for his loyalty.
So his fondness for The Marmot is understandable.
But as is so often the case with leaders like DeWitt it is also misguided
In his thinking, Bloom has not yet earned the right to dump The Marmot
But DeWitt knows that day is coming.

Aren't 6 innings around league average? I don't care what supporters say, a reliever can go longer than one inning at times. It just seems there is always too many pitching changes, no wonder the pen is always shot by August. I believe we knew it was coming. But using Dobbins last night was a joke in my opinion. He has a good start, and he is thrown to the pen.Ronnie Dobbs wrote: ↑27 Jul 2026 11:56 amExactly. Oli isn't a miracle worker.
