I get your exercise is for fun, however there are some players that I’m not interested in dealing.
As they are currently pitching, I’m looking to keep McGreevy, Pallante, and Leahy. I’m surprised that I am including Leahy, because I’ve spoken out about him belonging in the pen. However, he is changing my mind. I think his biggest obstacle to overcome has been his self confidence, but now he knows he can pitch, and belongs. I’m not trading him now when he’s just touching his ability.
I’d add Mathews to that group, and that’s four pitchers for the rotation. No body else is close in the minors, so I’d look to add one premium pitcher to that mix.

I like this. We have to scrabble together a starting staff. If we keep on trading off our starters, we become Pittsburgh.

Although it makes me cringe a little I can see Pallante being dealt.

You figure with a better team he would be even more effective, he doesn't cost much and it opens a rotation spot for next season.

I'm assuming you have May and Romero as definitely being traded?

I’m sorry I get a little lost with all the trade proposals. However I respect your research and thought process. But I can’t get straight in my head on how long before we go from rebuild to strong contenders.

I know 2027 is a dark hole right now but it just seems to me that spending some money on FA talent could get us there by 2028. When we discuss all these potential trades it just seems we are moving a lot further out than 2028.

Considering your trade options what is the overall impact on how long the rebuild lasts?

I’m rambling but I really wish I knew what the goal is for Bloom and the time table that is in his mind.

I see them as legit playoff contenders in 2027. To me that means they could win a wildcard and have a reasonable hope of advancing. In 2028 I see them as a legit division contender. To me that means they should compete for a division title and have a reasonable hope of advancing deeper. At that point they should have Rainiel Rodriguez and some of the better pitching arriving. In 2029 I expect them to be able to compete with anyone.

My expectation is that this should be our last year out of the playoffs for some time. Let's finish the heavy lifting.

If the Cards are going to make the playoffs in 2027, I am not sure how trading Pallante as you suggested above furthers that. I am assuming May and Liberatore will not be in the rotation in 2027. Dobbins may be earning a shot, Mathews should be promoted shortly so we can find out what we have. I assume Fitts will be back from injury next year. The rest of the prospects will not be ready by 2027, so they need at least 1 more starting pitcher, preferably a high end one.

If the Cards want to both buy and sell, i.e. get one of the Angels SPs and then trade one, maybe that works as an upgrade. But, BTV has updated their values recently. Pallante is still only at BTV $12M, which unless a team is making a massive overpay, is not bringing back a top 100 prospect.

The problem is that none of the Cards players have BTVs that move the needle that much. Its not like Brendan Donovan where they got a massive haul. The Cards now have pitching stacked in the minor leagues, albeit, the ETA is 2028/2029 for most of it. They have catching stacked, albeit, it is TBD if any of it is any good. They need CF and 3B desparately. But, so do most of the teams. I am guessing this trade deadline is disappointing. Either via inaction or in terms of the prospects received in return.

To make the playoffs next year, they are going to need to keep much of this team intact, hope Baez is an impact player and they will need to acquire 3-4 bullpen arms from outside the organization. This bullpen is horrifically bad. They also don't appear to have near term help at Memphis for it next year.

I hear a lot of chatter about the Yankees. If Herrera were to be shopped (I am not insisting he should be), that seems like an ideal team of interest.

Cards play in Yankee Stadium on 8/3, trade deadline day.
Herrera could just walk over to the home team locker room and put on a Yankee uniform if traded to them kinda "last minute".

My current thought is with Seattle, and having the Cards structure a trade for Castillo and Hancock with Noot and May going back. Balanced as needed.
Castillo's negative value gets the combo down to about +10 with that lining up pretty well with Noot and May's current BTV.
Do that while also upgrading the BP, and I think the Cards have at least a much better chance for a WC in 2027 than this year.
Some of the upgrade to the BP may be able to be done internally.
Castillo's contract only runs thru 2027, so no big commitment to the payroll for any length of time.
