And Philly indirectly gets back at cutter, who now looks like a wagamama (on of my favorite Japanese words)

Respectfully, all Carrlson did was sign an offer sheet. Gauthier, though, is demanding to be the highest paid on his team without that leverage, and without playing a premium position.

Gauthier is acting more selfishly than most hockey players. I get that its the new thing now (at least among Team USA), but I wonder how universal it really is. Are Canadian and Swedish kids this self absorbed?
True. You and I are talking different things here. I keep reading about how badly Verbeek screwed up, which is true, but Philly laid the groundwork for these offer sheets to go crazy. I’m talking about crazy offers becoming the new norm, and not Gauthier himself. But yeah , he seems like a jagoff for sure…
I think Verbeek has done some stupid things that (upset) people off but this situation is Philly doing crazy things, they offered a ridiculous contract that would not have been good for them either. Ducks should have let them have it, the contract is terrible.

Ain't nobody offered anything even close to that to their drafted kids that age unless they are absolute generational talent. Army would not have given him 15 million in this situation either, nobody would have.
Now maybe Verbeek did things behind the scenes that made people want to screw him, I don't know about that but it wasn't out of the ordinary to not give this kid 15 million in this situation at all.

Isn't Gauthier just a winger though?

A winger with 2 seasons on his resume wants to become the highest paid player in the league?

Sorry, that's not happening. He's not better than Kaprizov, Robertson, Rantannen, or many others.

This can't be a real ask, and if it is, let him sit out. There isn't a team out there that is going to pay him that, no matter how much the cap goes up.

Most of that also applies to Carlsson, just replace "Winger" with "center"

but overall I agree and most importantly he is not offer sheet eligible and really has no leverage outside trying to go short term and try again when he has more leverage or all the leverage0 Like the Tkachuk brothers

Is Carlsson overpaid? Probably, but if you are going to overpay a position then overpay a person who is going to have the largest impact on the game. That player is rarely ever a winger, except in a few rare cases ala Hull, Ovechkin, Kaprizov.

Carlson reportedly had 5 offers so lots of teams were circling here. And Verbeek could’ve signed him for 15 (or maybe even a little less) so it’s impossible to say he didn’t screw this up. But if he also wants to give Gauthier a big payday he still can. They’ve got Kreider at 6.5, Killorn at 6.25, and Vatrano at 4.75 and it wouldn’t be that hard to move any of those players.

Exactly. He is not a center. He wasnt offer sheeted. Players are smart enough to understand circumstances.
Gauthier will get a nice contract. Not 18M. Maybe he gets 14M. Seems stupid high---but that is what the circumstances dictate imho.

I dont believe pundits and I dont buy into all the rumors. We shall see what happens.

Its a dangerous trend happening in the NHL. Gonna make things really messy.
Some big pay days coming (each one a little different) Guys like:
Bedard
Misa
Will Smith
Gauthier
Celebrini
Lohrei
Fantili

Clayton Keller
Marchenko
Robertson

a 41 goal season is nothing to laugh at, but even that for one season shouldn't get you 14 million, that's 100+ point winger territory pay.

He should be in the 10 million range though.

Agreed - I have a hard time believing this is his actual negotiating posture. Makes much more sense as an idle brag or drunken boast, like the instant he heard about the offer sheet, maybe he said something like "Carlsson's getting 18M?!? (bleep), they better offer me more!" I can't imagine a professional agent going into a negotiation with that position, though.

No I can't see it either, but then again people never fail to amaze me with their narcissism.

If he holds out though, I don't care how many points he puts up, I'd stay very far away.

A second hold-out at his age is going to kill his rep IMO. If he really wants that money then his agent will tell him to take a bridge deal and get the big one when he has more leverage.

Yeah, if he holds out again, how many teams are going to want to put up with him doing this every few years? He'd set an absolutely awful trend.

Does anyone else see the irony in the results to Cutter Gauthier from Philly?

Gauthier either:
A: lost a key partner in Leo Carlsson that potentially would stunt his and the teams growth
-OR-
B: has to be paid less than Leo Carlsson and stew in feeling under paid for years.

This is revenge at a whole new level. Do NOT mess with Danny Briere. :D :D

I said on another thread on the winners and losers of the Carlsson offersheet that it was a devastatingly calculated move. Definitely agree.
