I do wonder how much of the Tampa success was based on him having a far superior scouting staff. That much seems to be evident.

Tampa had some real studs. Detroit never had quite the same studs.
Well he doesnt have Kucherov, Hedman or Vasilevskiy.

The trade for Faulk was really awful--they missing playoffs somehow. Really an awful end to the year. I thought Detroit was on the way up before last season.

I know it’s pipe dream, but if they move Larkin for futures does Mo Seider want to stick around? Now there’s a player that could move the needle for us. And every other nhl team of course.

Raymond and Seider are under contract so no sense discussing. They are the core of Detroit.
I would love to see Larkin and Jason Robertson solved.

Larkin is also under contract. And he was the core in DET too until his trade request.

Hedman was the gimme, but Kucherov was a 3rd rounder and Vasilevsky was the #19 and they let Bishop go after he was a 2 time finalist for a Vezina and took them to the finals for them, so that was kind of ballsy. They also nabbed Pointe, and their 3rd and 4th line role players were top tier during their cup runs.

Quite frankly their scouting staff was top notch, they just haven't had much of a chance to prove it since Brisebois has been giving away draft picks like cotton candy at a state fair.

That Faulk trade is gonna look awful when Buchnelnikov turn into Panarin-lite when he comes stateside and Dagenais is the Tage Thompson.

This is less about him playing tough guy GM with Larkin and more about Larkin's request being the last straw. He made a number of really questionable trades and signings in recent years trying to nudge that group into the playoffs. He dumped Walman *with a 2nd* on San Jose for nothing, who turned around and flipped him to Edmonton for a 1st +. Then you have trading this year's first for Faulk and then missing the playoffs. You have signings like Holl. Letting Gostisbehere walk as a UFA. Acquiring Vrana. It's a healthy list.

He has had some success in the draft with legit studs like Seider and Raymond. But without *any* real on-ice success, he ran out of time.

Wonder if this will impact Larkins trade demand.

Ownership probably came to Larkin and asked what it would take to keep him in Detroit. Larkin and his agent probably made a convincing argument that Yzerman needed to go. And just looking at the past 5 seasons should have been enough evidence that it wasn't working

Two observations...

1) Most GMs get fired when results are trending down, and then there is the Blues. Following disaster, the Blues hire a rookie copy-cat and keep all the captains and lieutenants.

2). This is the second GM that got fired after completing a trade with Army (Steen, Faulk) Bringing in those Blues veterans is more anchor than float. Good thing that Parayko killed the Buffalo trade. Army may have gotten 3 fired at one trade deadline.

Most overrated GM in the league for quite some time now. I kept hearing patience, patience while Danny Briere did more with less. If he wasn't Stevie Y, he'd have been fired years ago.

I wish he would've stayed though. I hope the Wings never make the playoffs again.

I liked Faulk as a player. I'm very much open to being happy he's gone, or maybe ecstatic?

Larkin wanting out simply has to reflect upon Yzermann one way or other ways imo.

Not saying there was any deal here to swap but Larkin wanting to leave was likely the final straw for Stevie boy with the brass.

At this point definitely a good move for Detroit to try to move on from all current baggage.
