Yzerman Out

Post by steve li »

The Detroit Red Wings today announced a change in hockey operations leadership, with Steve Yzerman transitioning from his role as Executive Vice President and General Manager. Yzerman will continue serving the organization as senior advisor to Governor and CEO, Chris Ilitch. A search for a new head of hockey operations is underway.

It’s about time. If he wasn’t named Steve Yzerman he wouldve been straight up fired a couple of years ago.

I mentioned in one of the Larkin threads last week that I had heard that many of the Redwing employees walk on eggshells around Stevie.
I think it was Dreger that mentioned it on the BarnBurner pod but I don’t recall for certain.

I have refrained from ripping Larkin since the reporting (leaks) has been inconclusive.
None of us know what has gone on behind the scenes. Larkin’s camp has been quiet.

What we do know as a fact is that Yzerman was a failure as the GM in Detroit.

Ok I’ll be the one to say it.

Wonder if this will impact Larkins trade demand.

Ownership probably came to Larkin and asked what it would take to keep him in Detroit. Larkin and his agent probably made a convincing argument that Yzerman needed to go. And just looking at the past 5 seasons should have been enough evidence that it wasn't working

That was a scenario I posted here a while back....can't believe it might happen. Larkin is a hometown boy but Yzerman is the Detroit legend - if he fell on the sword to keep Larkin at home after exploring all other options then hat's off to Steve.

Wow, I’m legitimately shocked. I didn’t think they would actually do it.

Sounds more like Steve didnt have a say in the matter. JMO.

Good for Detroit. Would suck for them if this wasn't enough to keep Larkin, though.

They should move on from Larkin as well, no way I go to camp with that guy on my roster. The Yzerplan was just never consistent and I think the push from ownership the last couple of years hurt more than it helped. Yzerman just seemed to be drifting aimlessly in open water. There was just no direction and that’s on him. Sounds like he’s still in charge for now though. Will be interested to see what they decide to do but Larkin has to go as well.

I know it’s pipe dream, but if they move Larkin for futures does Mo Seider want to stick around? Now there’s a player that could move the needle for us. And every other nhl team of course.

Raymond and Seider are under contract so no sense discussing. They are the core of Detroit.
I would love to see Larkin and Jason Robertson solved.

Yzerman's biggest failure was procuring a goaler until this season.

Gibson had a solid enough season, but he's beaten up after all those shots from those terrible Anaheim teams.

Not having a goaltender cost them the playoffs in a few seasons.

Lack of prospect development has killed the Yzerplan and his refusal to trade prospects to make up for it has been headscratching to say the least. Most of the trades he has made haven't been great either

I do wonder how much of the Tampa success was based on him having a far superior scouting staff. That much seems to be evident.
