What are the Ducks going to do?
Curious what ya'll are thinking here.
I'm assuming it's 80/20 they sign him. Because they have to.
I'm in that camp. Because I do believe they have to.
But to be really honest I'm so glad it's not the Blues put in this situation because my gut tells me it's actually the wrong move for multiple reasons.

No, they do not have to match but I expect they will.

I just don't see where they have a choice - they have to match. They already made a massive mistake and failing to match just makes it worse. It's not ideal, obviously, but there are no guarantees with those 4 first rounders, especially where the Flyers + Carlsson would likely be picking.

Re: What are the Ducks going to do?
Verbeek is supposedly whining to the league for a comp fifth rounder (not from philly) due to the cost of the contract (not sure how much I believe that) He is totally responsible for this situation having done it to four of his prospects. He is proud (donkey)(pit) who may be stubborn enough to cut Carlsson loose because he (bleep) him.

Hadn't considered his personality in this deal.IsDurbanodoingtime wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 17:40 pm Verbeek is supposedly whining to the league for a comp fifth rounder (not from philly) due to the cost of the contract (not sure how much I believe that) He is totally responsible for this situation having done it to four of his prospects. Good point if true.
He was on the dirty side as a player, no?

They could not match and then take some picks and trade for Petterson.
Not saying they should. But they could

Re: What are the Ducks going to do?
Original thought was that they match, a few days later I’m not 100% sure they will. They have a bunch of holes and they might have to move some of their older depth. I think Briere likely has set them back now and knocked them back to no playoffs next year regardless of what Verbeek does here.
They could also be working out a trade with Philly. The Flyers have a lot of really good prospects. Briere wants that #1 center so I’m sure he’s open for a deal if it’s there.

Re: What are the Ducks going to do?
Absolutely. Famously cut a digit off in a bizarre gardening accident. The interesting part of it is that he has like 9 million left to sign gauthier who unlike lc led the team in goals and points and famously spurned the flyers because fletcher did not have enough money to sign him after his freshman year at bc. Losing that year (and money) ticked him off so bad he refused to deal with flyers and briere (who had nothing to do with the decision). Do you think that guy is going to take one for the team and agree to take half of what lc is making ? Unless he signs a heavily backloaded deal but still looking at a minimum between 25 to 34 percent of cap tied up in two players.dhsux wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 17:41 pmHadn't considered his personality in this deal.IsDurbanodoingtime wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 17:40 pm Verbeek is supposedly whining to the league for a comp fifth rounder (not from philly) due to the cost of the contract (not sure how much I believe that) He is totally responsible for this situation having done it to four of his prospects. Agreed. But, part of me wants to see them take the picks and then throw 20M at Bedard or Fantilli. Let's get crazy with it!Frank Underwood wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 17:28 pm I just don't see where they have a choice - they have to match. Wow signing Gauthier after this debacle was already a concern before I knew all that. Watch Verbeek let Carlsson go to PHI and then sign Gauthier to slightly more.IsDurbanodoingtime wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 17:56 pmAbsolutely. Famously cut a digit off in a bizarre gardening accident. Going off some of the other posts - The fact he didn't immediately match on Carlsson said so much to me. Now we learn Carlsson even came to him before signing the PHI offer and offered ANA a lower deal at $15m! Could've never been a thing, and would've been like Matthews or Eichel, but now is closer to McDavid.

Re: What are the Ducks going to do?
I don’t read much into Verbeek taking all the time allotted to match or decline; they want Philly to sweat it out and have a more difficult time negotiating with Drysdale and Zegras. If Anaheim declines, the Flyers only have $12.5 mil left to sign both of those players plus 2 more for a 23-man roster. They certainly don’t want to do the Flyers any favors.zamadoo wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 18:23 pmWow signing Gauthier after this debacle was already a concern before I knew all that. Could you post the link that establishes this offer by Carlson to the Ducks please?zamadoo wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 18:23 pmWow signing Gauthier after this debacle was already a concern before I knew all that. And tfriede, I am responding to you here to save space in the thread - McTavish said Zegras is a very good friend who he reached out to about being moved. If PHI can't afford him, maybe we can land him.
