After 1 season where he scored 33 pts as Carolina’s #5 d-man averaging 18 min/game in the regular season and then having his ice time cut to under 15 min/game in the playoffs, he wants a huge raise.

As I stated earlier, Nikishin never played close to that many games before and it was vs.the best players in the world. This could explain the postseason dropoff. He'll probably get that money or close to it. I see nothing wrong with the Blues doing their due diligence looking into what it would take to get Nikishin. If the cost is too high for Steen, there won't be a deal.

Re: Blues rumored pursuing Nikishin
Couple of things for me.
8M to me is kinda the new 5.5-6 in this market. It's what i anticipate a good 2nd pairing defensemen to make, with a top pairing guy being worth 9-12M and a superstar 15ish.
I don't have too much an issue with the minutes lost in Carolina. I write some of that up to the coaching style, wanting veterans who might have been there before over youth who might make mistakes in inexperience. Some younger defensemen simply don't play at all. I think if he were on another team with less top to bottom defensemen, he could very well have been good enough to get ice time. Lets not forget Broberg also played near the bottom in Edmonton before coming over, doesn't always mean there is an issue with the player.
Now, with that being said i am in no rush to reward his 1 season with a long term solid deal. I'd much rather convince him to take a short term 5-6M 2/3 year deal and then give him 10-12M if he works out. If he is dead set on that, it would likely be enough for me to say no thanks given our depth. I'd much rather see us either invest in a longer term RHD solution to give us some more depth there, or see another right handed shot in the forward line, before worrying about upgrading from i guess Theo Lindstein? If it's for the same type of player i think that also would just be a pass. Fowler is more a placeholder for some other guys that are in the system imo so it's not really to move him out.
I just don't see the whole line of thought at this time, just my thoughts.

Re: Blues rumored pursuing Nikishin
We need a power play defenseman, and they get big NHL salaries if they can also defend, which Nikishkin can. $8m is the new $5.5m in the NHL. If we can trade for him without having to trade any of our top young guys, we definitely should. I'd not think twice about trading Lindstein, Stenberg, or Neighbors for Nikishkin. I'd also probably be willing to trade Carbonneau for him.
I expect Carolina will get a better offer from another team, though, either in terms of players received or salary cap dumped.

and he's a lefty that we have in abundance. It isn't remotely a position of need for us that we can afford to send a RHD minutes eater and one of the better defensive righties in the game making 6.5 a year for. It would be a terrible trade.noted wrote: ↑04 Jul 2026 17:47 pmBecause he’s 8 years older and Nikishin has a higher ceiling offensivelyTheJackBurton wrote: ↑04 Jul 2026 13:52 pmWhy would you ever want to trade a cost controlled top 4 right handed dman for a lefty dman who has one season in the league and wants more money than him?

I think you’re way overrating Nikishin. Sure he was a rookie but he’s 24 and he didn’t stand out much when I watched the Canes this year. Maybe he’ll be adjusted to the pace better next season but maybe not. Maybe it would make sense for a lesser piece than Parayko but I’d honestly just keep my powder dry for a better player at a position we need.zoiks wrote: ↑04 Jul 2026 20:00 pm We need a power play defenseman, and they get big NHL salaries if they can also defend, which Nikishkin can. $8m is the new $5.5m in the NHL. You’re overestimating the number of such players that will be available and agree to come to St. Louis. They aren’t going to get many shots at trading for a young top 4 D capable of major power play minutes. The Blues need to be in on trying to trade for any player like this that becomes available until that need has been filled. The Average Gatsby wrote: ↑04 Jul 2026 20:53 pmI think you’re way overrating Nikishin. That first sentence is pretty crazy because quite a few people have been traded to or signed in St. Louis lately. Jiricek could be power play quarterback. And honestly I don’t think Nikishin is that good.zoiks wrote: ↑04 Jul 2026 21:52 pmYou’re overestimating the number of such players that will be available and agree to come to St. Louis. Why would we put a lefty on the right side when there is literally no reason to? Why unnecessarily handicap ourselves like that?noted wrote: ↑04 Jul 2026 21:15 pmHe can play the right side. I didn't say not to trade for him, I'm saying the trade for him and sending Parayko is idiotic. We have an abundance of lefties, send a lefty.

You’ll notice none of the players we acquired had the ability to block being traded here, and the most recent one already had a long term contract in place. Such players don’t often get traded, especially with the rising salary cap.The Average Gatsby wrote: ↑04 Jul 2026 22:02 pmThat first sentence is pretty crazy because quite a few people have been traded to or signed in St. Louis lately. Counting on Jiricek to be the PP defenseman means you’re hoping in about 3 years we have a capable PP D. By then we’ll have missed the playoffs enough times that some of Thomas, Broberg, and Holloway will want out. That’s the reality of the current NHL.

Most of what you’re saying isn’t correct. The rising cap makes trades more possible, not less possible. That’s why there were so many more than normal on draft day. Carlo has a limited no trade and we obviously weren’t on that list. You have no idea if we’ll miss the playoffs or that Thomas, Broberg, and Holloway will want to leave. I don’t think the fate of this entire team rests on acquiring a guy that was a 3rd pairing defenseman this season.zoiks wrote: ↑04 Jul 2026 22:47 pmYou’ll notice none of the players we acquired had the ability to block being traded here, and the most recent one already had a long term contract in place.
