Re: Leo Carlsson Offer Sheet
Looks like a front loaded deal with a NMC in year 5.
Was Anaheim planning on handing $20.8M to Leo this season?

Re: Leo Carlsson Offer Sheet
So he's getting minimal salary and just gets a big signing bonus each year? If so, he'll establish residency in a no tax state in the offseason when he's paid the bonus. I think it works that way. Nice move if so.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑03 Jul 2026 17:57 pm Yr 1: $850K Salary, $19.95M Signing Bonus

This is interesting. I don’t know enough about the offer sheet legalese, but in theory couldn’t a team offer something insane for a shorter term to just get the player released to them and then immediately renegotiate the contract for term? e.g. offer sheet 3 years at 18M per (54M), then renegotiate to 7 years at 14M per (98M).dhsux wrote: ↑03 Jul 2026 14:53 pmYa I get that but there's the other side. 18 friggen mil I bet Philly could have gotten more years if they really pushed it.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑03 Jul 2026 14:51 pmBecause Leo sees a much bigger contract when he’s only 26.dhsux wrote: ↑03 Jul 2026 14:47 pmIf you are going all in as they are why only 5 years? The cost to acquire could have been much less and if they were hedging it makes even less sense.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑03 Jul 2026 14:39 pmThe cost to acquire is very doable for the Flyers . They are loaded with quality prospects. They are taking the next step.
This is a great deal for Carlson I don't know about the other party's.

You can only extend, resign, or renegotiate when there is 1 year left on the contract.WilliamWestcliffe wrote: ↑03 Jul 2026 18:25 pmThis is interesting. That and what I think WW was suggesting would just about require an under the table / off record type of negotiation.Bubble4427 wrote: ↑03 Jul 2026 18:29 pmYou can only extend, resign, or renegotiate when there is 1 year left on the contract.WilliamWestcliffe wrote: ↑03 Jul 2026 18:25 pmThis is interesting. Re: Leo Carlsson Offer Sheet
The NHL does not permit renegotiated contracts. The only things close to a changed contract are buyouts (which are one sided by the team) or a mutual contract termination, both of which require the player to first pass through waivers I believe.Bubble4427 wrote: ↑03 Jul 2026 18:29 pmYou can only extend, resign, or renegotiate when there is 1 year left on the contract.WilliamWestcliffe wrote: ↑03 Jul 2026 18:25 pmThis is interesting. Re: Leo Carlsson Offer Sheet
NHL.com has the headline that Carlsson signed with Flyers but when I click on the link it mentions that the offer sheet is still pending. So who know?

Re: Leo Carlsson Offer Sheet
The player accepts the offer sheet and is considered signed by the new team. The player's original team has 1 week to decide if they want to match the offer sheet, thereby keeping the player. So he would have signed with Philly, but it wouldn't be final until the Ducks decide to match or not, which they have a week to do. (IIRC)

Re: Leo Carlsson Offer Sheet
To the point of adding more years - the 5 year term is prexisely designed to make it less desirable for ANA to match by walking Carlsson right to UFA. ANA would obviously prefer 6 or 7 years of control, same as PHI, which is exactly why Briere went with 5.WilliamWestcliffe wrote: ↑03 Jul 2026 18:25 pmThis is interesting. They'll still match, I expect, but this contract structure (term, bonus, trade restriction) makes it as hard a pill for ANA to swallow as possible.
Love it.

You can probably thank Adam Oates for why players absolutely can’t renegotiate contracts anymore.
