Broberg, Lindstein, Fischer, Ralph the Blues are stacked at LD and Nikishin getting minutes reduced in a cup run is a big red flag for me. And no I wouldn't trade Stenberg for Nikishin. Stenberg could be had but not for a LD.
Stenberg for Nikishin would be a steal for the Blues...but I doubt Carolina would do that. Stenberg is about as overrated as any prospect in recent memory.
And people here are overrating Nikishin. The deal doesn't make sense for a variety of reasons. Stenberg again, can be traded but for a LD it makes absolutely zero sense.

Why? You think a LD has no value?

1- we have too many LD.
2- The player in question is not an upgrade unless we are also moving out Fowler which we aren't. Essentially this boils down to is Nikishin an upgrade over Lindstein? For this season he might be. After this season I have severe doubts about that. Nikishin's minutes were reduced big time in the cup run. I don't think this is a player to invest in unless he's replacing Fowler, which again, he wouldn't be. There's interest I'm sure, but the fit just isn't there.

1. We now have too many centers. That didn't stop Army/Steen from trading for them all.
2. So Nikishin would not be an improvement over Fowler? That is an asinine argument as Fowler's play last year was a disaster. We gave up a 2nd rounder and we got about 3 weeks of good play from Fowler plus a 1000th game ceremony.

We don't have too many centers? Bizarre comment. Even if we did, it's easier to move a center to wing than to adjust a LD to play RD. Incoherent comparison.

Yes Nikishin would be an upgrade over Fowler. Carolina has zero interest in Fowler, so where is he going in this scenario? Nobody wants him. There isn't a trade to be made unless we also can dump Fowler which ain't happening.

There’s no such thing as too many centers. And even if there were, we don’t have too many.

Totally agree - both look like the kind of players good teams have. I’d prefer giving them big minutes to find out what they are.

Probably because they were able to sign better players long term in a much lower market

This isn’t rocket science. Carolina has Jaccob Slavin and K’Andre Miller signed long term at below market value contracts for its top 2 LHD, so rather than paying Nikishin as a 3rd pair LHD more than those 2 are being paid, Carolina is choosing to trade from a position of roster surplus to upgrade its roster elsewhere. I think Carolina would ideally want a RHD or center in return for Nikishin, which would mean we don’t match up with them as a trade partner, but maybe they don’t get such an offer.

Yes it appears so. Specially prospects that will likely never achieve as much as our NHL players they hate and would give away.

Don't believe for a second that nobody wants Fowler. If he were available there would be plenty of interest.

It's crazy. The Sabres didn't trade Byram because they thought he was a bad player. Did the Golden Knights trade Dorofeyev because they "gave up on him"? Did the Sharks trade Eklund because they think he won't make it in the NHL? People can be so unrealistic when it comes to player movement.

Even the McTavish trade. The Ducks aren't "giving up" on McTavish. He just isn't a good fit for their team right now. It's good asset management. Just like the Blues giving up 2 of their 4 1st up for a former 3rd OA pick is good asset management

Well except in this case it wasn't.
