**edit** I mean tear up the mutual option and sign him to a three or four year deal.
A fourth option would be to deal him at the deadline then still pursue him in the off-season. Doesn't happen too often, but certainly a possibility. Just did with Merrill Kelly this off-season (Aroldis Chapman a decade earlier).

The Cardinals are going to need more SP this coming off-season all the same. And they have plenty of payroll space. That'll be the next step in the rebuild.
Do the Cardinals really have payroll space? I gotta believe theyre going to start getting pressure to do some extensions. Specifically, JJ, Walker, Ivan? That seems to be the ongoing trend, and really is a smart move for the small market teams.

Other than the $500k buyouts for May and Urias, the Cardinals have literally no one on the books for 2027 or beyond. Then around $28.5 retained of Arenado's and Contreras's '27 salaries.

Everyone on the roster will be arbitration or pre-arb. So yes, plenty of payroll space. Even with possible extensions. Maybe they don't return to the $150m+ payrolls right away, but there's still insane amount of space. Any extensions would be at modest amounts until it started covering Arb3 and free agency years.

Thats good news. Thanks for the breakdown.

Then we sign FA Skubal in the offseason for a reduced price due to injury concerns?

I don't see BDWJr spending any "big" money (and Skubal would require $400+M) this offseason JDW given the (expected) lockout once the CBA expires at seasons end.

Yep. He and his agents got too greedy. It’s a massive fumble.
It just seemed like a probability thing to me. The odds were against any pitcher having a 3rd season in a row like that.
But also he and his agents should known he was on borrowed time.
Now that is very true

Skubal needs to return in August and be his usual dominant self the last two months of the season to still get $400m. The timing of the injury is really unfortunate for him.

Honestly walt arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow is nothing.

He'll be good as new in 3 months.

The big money teams will be lining up to throw $400+M at him this offseason unless the Tigers do it first (and he wants to stay) or teams hold back until the new CBA is in place.

That's the hope! But nothing guaranteed with any surgery. If he returns and gets shelled, that pay day will either be greatly reduced or have to wait a year to prove full health. Teams aren't going to gamble $400m if they think he's damaged goods.

After my playing days I had the same procedure. I wasn't a pitcher (after Little League) but still could throw upper 80's when we played around w/the jugs gun and I had now problem throwing as hard after mine. It's really a simple procedure.

My money is on Skubal being as dominant as ever once he's back on the mound.

Definitely pulling for him. Hate seeing the superstars (or anyone) get hurt. Especially when it potentially impacts their one big shot at free agency.

Let’s not call it unfortunate timing. He turned down an f-load of money to bet on himself and lost.

He’s not getting $400.

This is almost always a precursor to another elbow repair. Teams aren’t stupid. They know what causes this. Bone spurs are a symptom of deterioration in the joint.

Sounds like Skubals camp may have to gamble on him again.

Sign for short term money and if he regains form gets the bag in 2028.
