Cy Young P Tarik Sukbal to have surgery ..loose bodies in left elbow
Major blow to Tigers .. no timetable for return reports are 2 to 3 months
This is bad timing for Skubal as he is to become a free agent at end of this season.
Teams considering this top ace have to consider the following:
2016 Tommy John surgery 10 years ago
2022 Flexor tendon surgery
and now 2026 arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies in pitching elbow

Always sad to hear when talented pitchers have any kind of surgery.

A third option would be to extend him.
**edit** I mean tear up the mutual option and sign him to a three or four year deal.

A fourth option would be to deal him at the deadline then still pursue him in the off-season. Doesn't happen too often, but certainly a possibility. Just did with Merrill Kelly this off-season (Aroldis Chapman a decade earlier).
The Cardinals are going to need more SP this coming off-season all the same. And they have plenty of payroll space. That'll be the next step in the rebuild.

It just seemed like a probability thing to me. The odds were against any pitcher having a 3rd season in a row like that.An Old Friend wrote: ↑05 May 2026 09:49 amYep. He and his agents got too greedy. It’s a massive fumble.

But also he and his agents should known he was on borrowed time.C-Unit wrote: ↑05 May 2026 10:18 amIt just seemed like a probability thing to me. Do the Cardinals really have payroll space? I gotta believe theyre going to start getting pressure to do some extensions. Specifically, JJ, Walker, Ivan? That seems to be the ongoing trend, and really is a smart move for the small market teams.WaltsSuccessor wrote: ↑05 May 2026 09:27 amA fourth option would be to deal him at the deadline then still pursue him in the off-season. I believe it depends on where the Cardinals would be in the division race. Just trading a player is not always an answer to winning.rockondlouie wrote: ↑05 May 2026 09:05 amMay has a mutual $20M option OR
IF he's pitching well, then 100% he'd opt out and you'd have nothing to show for him so you have to trade him since he'd bring back a solid prospect.

We'll have to see where the birds' stand by the end of June OR.OldRed wrote: ↑05 May 2026 10:40 amI believe it depends on where the Cardinals would be in the division race. But I don't expect them to veer from their L-T plan.
If he's pitching the way he's been the past four starts, then may is going to be a hot commodity on the trade market who could bring back a really good prospect.
I don't see them extending him or bidding for him after this season if they do deal him and he opts out.
The same (traded) will likely go for Noot, JoJo and O'Brien.
The L-T plan is to garner as many prospects as possible, these four players don't figure to be in those L-T plans.
It's going to s u c k when/if they are dealt w/the Cardinals still in NLC and/or WC contention but (IMO) that's what is going to happen.
Bloom won't give them away though just to move them, he'll have to get back value for all four.
