So where is all this "depth" folks here were talking about for the rotation?

It was foolish to say that.

Fitts is gone. Mathews has issues. It's apparent as if we shouldn't have already known Leahy isnt an answer.

That leaves Dobbins who's had injury issues and is far from proven as a solution.

Every week I have to remind posters here that Mathews had a shoulder injury, and he hasn’t been able to throw strikes since returning from that injury. Many pitchers with shoulder injuries never regain command of pitches. What we’ve seen the past couple years is likely what he’ll be post-injury. He’s not even an MLB bullpen arm unless he can drastically cut his walk rate, which he likely won’t.

It is the other side of the strategy when we can get frustrated with
drafting or trading for so many pitchers.

Who?
Bruce Zimmerman. 31 year old lefty at Memphis, signed as a FA in the off season to provide some fill in experience for the younger guys. Has been the ace of the staff, with an ERA of 3.15.

Now 16 BB's issued in 15.2 innings this year.
After 74 in 99 innings a year ago.
I warned last offseason that he should be traded as part of a package before his stock fell even further.
Those who were foolishly expecting to see him in STL this year and contributing are going to be very disappointed.
He had very, very little trade value even then mel, nothing more than some other teams equally disappointing prospect.

I've moved on from him just as I have from Hence & Roby, they're nothing but lotto tickets now.
Great point, Rock. What in the heck were they going to get back for him?

He definitely should be.

The Zimmerman thought could happen later. IMO he has the same issue
as others on the staff who are falling behind in the count and then don't
have a pitch to challenge the batter with. A small portion of what is
leading to high hits and walks.

Mathews (and Mautz too) has worked all his life to make the majors and now finds himself soooo close at age 25, with a rotation that could use him at any time and he just can't throw strikes. He and Mautz are not getting hit hard- they just can't consistently throw strikes. So close, and yet...

Yea zimmerman could happen later but since he isnt on the 40 man yet and bloom doesnt like losing people off the 40 man i would say something would have to really be wrong with dobbins for him not to get the first call

Laugh all you want, 11, but he’s pitching well, and has some major league experience. I took your question as being sincere. My bad.

If they don't do it during the year, the Cardinals have to make a decision about putting Mathews on the 40 man roster this winter to protect him in the Rule 5 draft. If you had to decide today, would you protect him? Do you think another team would claim him?
