Re: ABS
Why only two challenges. Unlimited would probably be too many. Why not 5 per team. Adds 90 seconds to game. And five challenges would greatly police the zone.

I think two has produced a slightly better game, in only a small sample. I think unlimited might be every pitch one way or another.ScotchMIrish wrote: ↑30 Mar 2026 07:38 am No reason for ABS to be limited to 2 successful challenges. It should be ever pitch.
At about 13 seconds per event, I like 4-5 challenges.

If you challenge and you’re correct you don’t lose the challenge.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑30 Mar 2026 06:22 amWhy only two challenges. Unlimited would probably be too many. Why not 5 per team. Adds 90 seconds to game. And five challenges would greatly police the zone.
Otherwise how could Bucknor have been challenged 8 times in his game the other day?

I hear ya. But you have to wonder if unlimited, every pitch might be a challenge. That’s irritating. I think a limit is there for your situation, where it actually holds down the calls. Eight as compared to many more.Bomber1 wrote: ↑30 Mar 2026 08:14 amIf you challenge and you’re correct you don’t lose the challenge.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑30 Mar 2026 06:22 amWhy only two challenges. Yes you don't lose the challenge if you're correct.
For me the most interesting part is seeing how players are gonna passively show up the umps, e.g. how Arozarena took his base the other day before the video even got up on screen.
I also think something to watch is how umps might crack down on the 2-second window in which someone can challenge... we've already seen some questionable rulings around that for both batter and catcher. Like the catcher might be waiting to hear a call, and then challenge when they don't hear it, but a petty ump could say they missed the window. This will be the only way umps have any control over it going forward, so you can bet there will be some less-than-professional application of this rule.
Also strategically it doesn't make much sense to challenge every pitch, you typically only want to do it with 2 strikes or 3 balls, and you want to wait until the 2nd half of the game.
A Youtuber did a pretty good video about the statistics of when to do it, and how the Brewers were trying to assist from the dugout:

Nice write. Do you think managers hold or keep a challenge for a major risp situation- called strike/ball. That would greatly affect inning and game.3dender wrote: ↑30 Mar 2026 08:23 am Yes you don't lose the challenge if you're correct.

No need for challenges. Let the ABS call every pitch. Take the guesswork out of it.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑30 Mar 2026 07:41 amI think two has produced a slightly better game, in only a small sample. So the ABS could breed negative action. Lack of trust. Take away the option from player.

Yeah, I bet internally teams are already giving their guys green/yellow/red lights on who can challenge and when.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑30 Mar 2026 08:40 amSo the ABS could breed negative action. Lack of trust. Take away the option from player.
