Could the rebuild out last JJ tenure
Good morning.
Over night thought. Could the rebuild drag on for 3-5 more years. If not a rebuild, then a down turn.
Given that, JJ will be in Arb years, approaching FA. If he turns into stud, we can’t afford him. So we are limited on years on the team.
So isn’t it a fact we got 5 ish years to become competitive, build the core, and then compete, before his status is an issue.
We are young pitcher heavy now, and infielder heavy. We will saturate the outfield next. Then lock out.
Any thing here.

This could be a real problem. With that problem will continue to decline no matter what kind of "give a ways" they have. They will have to "catch" lightening in a bottle for things to improve over the next 3-5 years. And I will add, make TV viewing easier for the casual fan to keep interest alive.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑03 Mar 2026 07:28 am Good morning.

It appears the core of Walker, Winn, Scott, Gorman, A catcher, plus JJ will be it moving forward.OldRed wrote: ↑03 Mar 2026 07:34 amThis could be a real problem. Everytime one of the above doesn’t produce is a year lost. Soon it adds up.

My take is that if JJ becomes a star player and face if the franchise, Bloom will do everything to sign him to long term deal at market price. When Isay long term , 7 years plussikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑03 Mar 2026 07:28 am Good morning.

Similar to what low payroll Brewers did when they locked up Christian Yelich many years back as he emerged a star player.

Re: Could the rebuild out last JJ tenure
Your scenario covers 7-8 years, plenty long enough for a rebuild to be effective and productive. This we enjoy the JJ years; however. If we don’t sign long term, does the initial scenario become more dire.ramfandan wrote: ↑03 Mar 2026 07:41 amMy take is that if JJ becomes a star player and face if the franchise, Bloom will do everything to sign him to long term deal at market price. Currently on Cardinals , it appears that Winn and JJ would be the two guys to pay big bucks to keep.. and surround them with good complimentary players. If they get a big home run guy thru the draft, that could be the 3rd .
Retaining an ace pitcher is much tougher as their salaries are super high.

JJ has almost nothing to do with this. There has to be changes to the current CBA to address competitive advantages with the larger market teams or the current lopsided system will take a stronger hold on MLB. IMO, this is the necessary change.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next CBA cuts the the FA time down. Maybe to the point that they become free agents after 4 years.

Nice written. Good note on starting pitchers salaries. Hence why we filled up with young arms.ramfandan wrote: ↑03 Mar 2026 07:46 amramfandan wrote: ↑03 Mar 2026 07:41 amMy take is that if JJ becomes a star player and face if the franchise, Bloom will do everything to sign him to long term deal at market price. Should probably trade him now just in case.
Re: Could the rebuild out last JJ tenure
Actually my scenario woul cover 10 years or so as my thinking was when he has emerged after hus first 3 seasons, then you are locking him up for 7 plus years after that.. again similar to Yelichsikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑03 Mar 2026 07:44 amYour scenario covers 7-8 years, plenty long enough for a rebuild to be effective and productive. Re: Could the rebuild out last JJ tenure
Owners agreeing to reduce free agency to 4 years would shock me big time . Getting them to give up 1 year to 5 years costs them multi- millions of dollars .sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑03 Mar 2026 07:51 amThat was a thought. A one year concession to 5 would be major concession.

Excellent question.
I'd say likely to occur.
If it does, it's a major cluster [fork].
Great post and it should get a lot of activity.

Reminds me of that viral video of the kid post-dental appointment, in the backseat of a car, still drugged up on dental drugs. Feeling the affects of the drugs he says, "Will it be like this forever?"
Seeing that the Cards' rebuild is about 3.5 months in, it's a little embarrassing to suggest it will take 5 years.
What surprises me aren't the CTers against the rebuild, but rather the ones who don't understand it and have no idea what they are looking at.
The 2026 team could be better than 2025.
By 2027, IMO, they will start spending money.
