Re: Quintana, Montgomery and Chafin
My guess is Bloom will see what our pitching looks like in spring training before making any moves. The plan is to replace Gray with May. Perhaps someone steps up in spring training. I'm not sure the plan is to add salary just to get innings from a guy but if I was going to sign any of those guys it would be Quintana so long as he comes cheap on a 1 year deal. If he hasn't already signed somewhere it's probably because he wants more years and more money than anybody is willing to give.
Re: Quintana, Montgomery and Chafin
Since they need a RHH OF but they would not fork over 5 MM for Andujar or Hays, I suspect you all should just be satisfied with Pallante in the starting rotation.
Quintana signed with Colorado for 1 year 6 MM
Re: Quintana, Montgomery and Chafin
...........and now Montgomery signed with the Rangers.

Your first paragraph is representative of why they are in the shape they are…KeeptheRamsinSTL wrote: ↑25 Jan 2026 14:58 pmWhat about Max Scherzer? He is very near the end of his career but he grew up a Cardinals fan. This would give him a chance to play for his hometown team. He would bring good PR to the Cardinals/DeWitts. His signing would encourage fans to return. Scherzer would a good veteran to help this young staff. Busch Stadium is a friendly park for pitchers.Cardly wrote: ↑25 Jan 2026 13:27 pm I get the youth movement.
With that, the innings are many and the proven arms are few.
Thoughts:
Sign Quintana - trade at deadline
Sign Montgomery - don’t trade this season but he will be ready to pitch mid season and could cover innings later in the season.
Sign Andrew Chafin - trade at the deadline.
Trade Romero NOW - get a decent prospect
Add a legit righty bat who can hit lefties.
I understand that Scherzer most likely wants to go to a contender but he remains unsigned. Bloom could offer him a deal and let him know that if the Cardinals are not in contention at the trade deadline that he would try to trade him to a contender that Scherzer would be interested in.

Re: Quintana, Montgomery and Chafin
Libby and McGreevy are in.
May presumably also.
Next up I would guess is Fitts/Dobbins/Leahy(?).
Pallante as a fall back and destined for the BP.
Mathews is on the brink and could make a case in ST.
I get the theory in signing a vet on a one year deal?
But I also get the theory in letting those other guys get a shot first!
