Athletic Department Considers a Sponsorship Re-naming Memorial Stadium

Post by Curmudgeon »

A.D. Laird Veatch says, "[W]e are moving forward with securing naming rights for Memorial Stadium....if a naming rights partner is secured, one option under evaluation is removing 'Memorial' from the stadium’s official name."

I'm a traditionalist and a veteran, so Memorial Stadium would be my preference. But it appears that ship has sailed, so how about "Marching Mizzou's Home Field"?

I don't think you're getting what "naming rights" are. Like Busch Stadium and the Enterprise Center.

I doubt that Marching Mizzou can bring much money to the table or sell many tickets to the games!
Kroenke Family Memorial Stadium is a lot more likely.

Why not leave Memorial and add the sponsor name, like Hallmark Memorial Stadium. I too would hate to see the memorial aspect lost for a few dollars . More than 11,000 Missourians were killed or injured in WWI.

The right sponsor might agree with that good idea and it would be a double sword win imo.

The word Memorial would not detract from the sponsors name brand prominence and it would show class to leave a bit of the past in place.

Strongly agree with both of you. Thanks.

They did say they would offset losing the name with providing other ways (unspecified) to honor the state's fallen soldiers.
And, in reality, the overwhelming majority of the time, the term used to describe the stadium is Faurot Field. Which is mildly interesting b/c Mizzou Arena is not referred to as Norm Stewart Court.

Georgia Tech signed a deal a couple years ago to play at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field for something like $70M over 20 years. It had been Grant Field (not named for U.S.) for more than 100 years although some Georgia fans thought it should be named for Mark Richt, given his teams' success in Atlanta.

I know this would be hard to measure, but is there any evidence that companies reap a boost in business from putting their name on a stadium? Does anyone pick Enterprise over Avis because they went to a Blues game two nights before?

I bet a beer that doesn’t happen. Keeping “Memorial” wards off bad press. On the other hand, I don’t trust the Department of Money Collection either.

As to the suggestion of “Marching Mizzou Home Field”, some of you need to buy a sense of humor. Curmudgeon knows that isn’t going to happen even though we’d like it.

Norm Stewart Court at XPaigeX Mizzou Arena in front of Curmudgeon! That might not be long enough. (You're good for the $, aren't you, Curmudgeon?)
Now, on the football stadium, you have to leave Memorial in there. It was built 100 years ago & dedicated to the Mizzou students & alums who were casualties in WWI so omitting Memorial would be egregious. Whatever company wants to pay for the naming rights makes no difference to me. I'll still call it Faurot Field. Look at the other "naming rights" venues. The Blues' area has had so many names I can't even remember them all. So, let them get some $, name it whatever & we'll just stick with Faurot.
