This team has been toast for a while. I don't even get upset at this point. I've always abhorred tanking, but I'm all in for draft position now.
Too bad due to the lottery, we’ll probably fall to 7th or 8th. When has anyone known the Blues to catch a break with the league?
Well we did in 2006... but your outlook is definitely understandable and a good question.
Number 4 overall in 2008, Alex Pietrangelo.
Thanks. I misremembered and thought that we caught a break and moved up to #1 in the Draft Lottery only in 2006 and not in 2008. But apparently no move in either case...we were real bad in 2006 and just bad in 2008.
We did have the top pick in ‘06 and took Erik Johnson
05 first pick was Crosby. Man oh man.

The Blues still haven't had a Centerman anywhere near close to any of those in 20 years. Although Pierre Turgeon was certainly excellent way back then.

That was the draft after the lockout. They did a lottery for all teams draft position. I don’t remember who should have picked first, but it wasn’t Pittsburgh. We fell 10 to 15 spots from where we should have picked. We ended up 25th or 26th and took Oshie.

And Fleury #1 overall in 2003. Quite the drafting!

Right, yes! How could I forget?? #1, #2, #1, #2 right in a row. And all either a Goalie or Center. What could go wrong?...two years later in the Finals and the next year winning the Cup.

It's as much of when you are bad as just being bad

Yep, and the factor — perhaps as important as drafting correctly — is player development.

Absolutely it can never be discounted.

If you can take a 3rd rounder and turn him into a 2nd liner you will never struggle.
