The Blues still haven't had a Centerman anywhere near close to any of those in 20 years. Although Pierre Turgeon was certainly excellent way back then.

That was the draft after the lockout. They did a lottery for all teams draft position. I don’t remember who should have picked first, but it wasn’t Pittsburgh. We fell 10 to 15 spots from where we should have picked. We ended up 25th or 26th and took Oshie.Absolut wrote: ↑04 Feb 2026 07:48 am05 first pick was Crosby. And Fleury #1 overall in 2003. Quite the drafting!Old_Goat wrote: ↑04 Feb 2026 07:58 am And Pens 2nd Overall picks in '04 and '06 respectively were Malkin and Jordan Staal...two big skilled Centermen still producing well in the NHL!

Right, yes! How could I forget?? #1, #2, #1, #2 right in a row. And all either a Goalie or Center. What could go wrong?...two years later in the Finals and the next year winning the Cup.blues2112 wrote: ↑04 Feb 2026 12:24 pmAnd Fleury #1 overall in 2003. Yep, and the factor — perhaps as important as drafting correctly — is player development.TheJackBurton wrote: ↑04 Feb 2026 14:01 pmIt's as much of when you are bad as just being badblues2112 wrote: ↑04 Feb 2026 12:24 pmAnd Fleury #1 overall in 2003. If you can take a 3rd rounder and turn him into a 2nd liner you will never struggle.
