I remember Bader having a huge issue chasing sliders down and away. It took him a while to get it corrected, hopefully JW can get there.
Walker regardless Can only get better. I think he has bottomed out. Now if he would not chase, he’d be a stud with his hard hitting ability.

Maybe the zone, not giving away a cheap strike, constantly ahead in the count, will help.

Looking for any edge here.
Walker has yet to show any improvement, the more he plays.
Disagree. His mastery
Of the two strike timeout in unparalleled
No kidding. I did have a mental of him 0-2 when I typed. Seriously though, if he can get any help staying away from the quick two strike issue, then he will hit better.

Walker. I bet that name was most here first thought. Then Gorman.

Mt bet is on JJ. He has a mastery of the zone as it exists with umpires. Being novel, in its first year, he will master it from the get go, and might be even a better hitter.

Walker. Chases the outside slider. Will he adapt to the zone and lay off.

Gorman. Will he master and lay off the high stuff.

Dark hirses- Winn and Scott. Just imagine if their walks increase and hard hit ball rage increases.

Who best benefits from ABS.
Great question, Dog! I think this is a WIN-WIN-WIN. Pitchers will benefit from a standardized strike zone. The best ones will find a batter's weak spot and keep hitting it. Batters will benefit from accuracy and standardization, and the fans will win from getting a cleaner, quicker game.

Ivan Herrera's above average pitch framing stands to take a hit.

I. Hererra if he's truly going to be catching since his framing skills were on the low side.

As will the best. Finally an offensive change that the defense has no real counter.

Only two challenges a game won't correct terrible umpiring.

Unless I am mistaken, isn't the rule that each team will have 2 or 3 call challenges? I assume if you win the challenge that you get to keep it. So there will still be times a catcher frames a pitch that is a ball, but right on the order and doesn't get challenged. So I don't think pitch framing will be completely gone. And the system is only in play when a team wants to use the challenge right? I see it slowing the game down a little bit overall. It should just be an automatic call on every pitch instead of a challenge system.

I went to AI to get some more info about the system. I didn't realize it's a 2D plane that measures in the middle of the zone:

The Strike Zone in ABS
The official MLB rulebook defines the strike zone as a 3D space over home plate (from just below the kneecap to midway between shoulders and uniform pants top). However, ABS uses a 2D plane at the middle of the plate (not the front), with:

Width: 17 inches (full plate width).
Height: Adjusted per batter (top at ~53.5% of height, bottom at ~27%).

Rule: If any part of the ball touches any part of this zone, it's a strike.

This 2D approach differs from a full 3D zone (which was tested but not adopted, partly to avoid issues like curveballs grazing the back edge).

Yes, two per game but if you challenge and overturn the call you retain the challenge. Hypothetically, a team could challenge 5 or 6 times per game and possibly still have one challenge remaining at the end of the game. IF the umpiring is that terrible at home plate, you could have a ton of challenges.

Lots of good points in this thread. Are we headed towards full time use of ABS? Or will the umps union fight that? I hope we find a way to use it all the time. Take the human error factor out of the equation. Let the players try to exploit the opponents’ weaknesses within the system.

Hoosier59 wrote: 28 Jan 2026 08:02 am Noot and Donovan, as you say, players who take a lot of pitches will benefit a lot. One thing that will definitely change, is the automatic called strike on 3-0 counts. We’ve all seen them! Anywhere near the zone and it gets called a strike. If nothing else it runs up the pitchers pitch count. We also see the automatic ball called a lot on 0-2 counts.
I’m for the system, make the Umps be held more accountable!
I don't see the claim about "a lot" of automatic called strike on a 3-0 count, or an automatic ball, called on an 0-2 count.
I always knew you knew nothing about baseball. Now I finally have my final piece of evidence.

You truly are as clueless on baseball as one can get! Thanks for giving me a good chuckle this morning, guy.

Can’t wait for Angel Hernandez to eject the automated system from a game.

Watched Herrera use the ABS system a lot in Memphis. He was actually very good at when to use it/when not to for his team. The team also had set times when a player could/could not challenge.

I have watched this system a lot in AAA. Game is barely slowed on a challenge. Very quick and clean.
