It all depends. When I was in graduate school, one could take either a thesis or no thesis option for a master's degree. As an example, one may need 30 hours (college credits) to earn a master's degree or 24 hours and a write a thesis (which will need to be defended). To say no classes are needed is a stretch. To earn a doctorate, most schools will require a thesis (research).

if you want to have a civil conversation i am happy to tell you my opinions of why Self and KU struggled the last 2 yrs -- mostly the same reasons some of the other really sucessfull coaches in their early 60's walked away from NIL. If you want to just knee jerk react to me and hate on my alma mater that is fine too and i will just keep ignoring you --- its up to you. This is far from the biggest problem in “new football”.

If you are as dumb as a rock, but talented at football, then join the minor league, get paid and try to advance to the pros.

This is versus the old way where academically weak
athletes were handled via lies, basket weaving and NCAA penalties when you dutifully report tutor misconduct.

If you are smart and want a college degree, sign up and take classes. You got the money!

Yeah, the exact relationship with the minor league team
and associated (in name only) college is complicated, but not nearly as bad as the transfer portal and craziness of NIL.
