Golden Globes

The 'Ol Glaze Dog killed it with her monologue tonight...

Hometown girl doing STL proud, I think she's got this gig for the rest of her life if she wants it. Nice dig at talentless hack Bari Weiss, too (and she did it on her network).

She definitely seems like a natural hosting that show. Also liked the Spinal Tap references as tribute to Rob Reiner at the end.

Missed the show but love these gigs. They gave great acid wit :

While I normally don't pay much attention to awards shows the females in my house do. I happened to be in the room when the best actress in a TV drama was announced and all is now correct in the world because Rhea Seehorn won for Pluribus. This in some very small fashion makes up for the 6 or so cycles of both the Globes and the Emmy's where they ignored her in BCS.

Congrats to Rhea. Her speech was lovely BTW. She was legit shaking nervous but made sure to acknowledge everyone.

Nikki killed it, and yes, I think it is hers as long as she wants it, unless they just want to mix it up.

Very happy for Rhea Seehorn, who just seems like a very cool person, and was so undervalued by every award show committee during her BCS run. She wasn't even nominated once, which is beyond ridiculous, as anyone who has watched a minute of that show knows.

She always goes on Howard Stern after these things or the roasts she does and talks about the show and reads jokes that were either too harsh for the air or that just didn't work. The jokes that don't make the air are usually really freaking funny as well.

She also discussed in detail yesterday her process of preparing specifically for the Globes. She writes, she has a team of her own writers she works with and the Globes also have writers. She discussed the iterative process of joke prep. She said she took the jokes to small comedy clubs in NYC and LA (too bad she didn't come to one of our small clubs), on numerous occasions. She ran jokes by other comedians. Kimmel and Seth Meyers appearances were specifically mentioned. The Sean Penn joke about the aging and the leather face were given a two thumbs up on Kimmel. They were cutting and fine tuning jokes up until an hour or so before the show. She did not mention Gervais once. I doubt he was involved.

According to what I've been able to find out, when Gervais hosted the GG's, he wrote his own jokes, didn't rehearse them, ran them by lawyers to keep from getting sued :

Love him or hate him, the dude doesn't care. I love him, and think that he delivered some all-time monologues.

Not to hijack this thread, but if you haven't seen this before, it is one of the funniest things you will see today -

If Gervais was able to get his jokes prepped and done without any oversight from some suit at whatever network they aired when he hosted, that's fantastic. Clearly he did something right because they asked him back what, five times?

The contrast between him and Nikki is so funny. Nikki makes fun of the age of Leo's date and then goes something like "sorry, I don't feel right doing this." Ricky makes fun of Leo's girlfriends age, the audience groans and it's "shut up, just shut up, I don't care."

Very true. However, one of the writers either at WaPo or NYT yesterday just lambasted the quality of his latest standup special that won a GG, along w/ the folks who awarded it for doing so - basically called it a tired rehash. Haven't seen the actual special, but it was a harsh takedown.

Everything we discuss on these sub forums, food, music, movies, TV, comedy, it's all so subjective. What you like might make me cringe and vice versa depending on the topic. It's hard for me to take anyone who reviews these topics for a living seriously. I mean if I see 7 reviews of a new restaurant and all 7 say the service sucks, I might listen and stay away. But if some writer from the WaPo or NYT doesn't like a comedy special it's not going to sway me one bit. I know who I like and who bores me, especially with standup.

And this wasn't any shot at you. Hopefully you can tell I'm not a fan of most critics.

Also true. A lot of these folks (oddly/perversely as I see it,) go after the more intelligent movies in a nit-picky fashion, while of course waving thru the train of pablum they have to do to pump the trade. The more actually adult a film is, quite often the less any particular critic, or critics in general, can be relied upon as a filter for viewing, or a cogent assessment, in my experience.
