Re: Canada vs the czechs thread
McKenna is still going first overall. I don’t think any of the other guys showed enough to take that spot away. Stenberg wasn’t even the best player on Sweden. Verhoeff didn’t show anything.
I take Carson Carels over Verhoeff and every other dman in the draft at this moment in time. He’s got so much poise with the puck ,head is always up, he’s makes very good reads he’s just a solid player.
McKenna is also having a solid game today. That’s the kind of response you want to see from him.

Only argument I could see is if a team needed a dman but you have to be really sold on one of those guys but at this point I just don’t see it. It would be better to trade down for a haul and get your dman that way

That’s a good point that I hadn’t thought of. Absent the so-called generational talent at the top, could this be the year that a team trades one of the top 1-3 picks for a haul?Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑05 Jan 2026 16:36 pm Only argument I could see is if a team needed a dman but you have to be really sold on one of those guys but at this point I just don’t see it. I wasn’t impressed with Verhoeff at all, but maybe it was just a bad game.

Smits might be the first dman off the board but I would take Carels. Verhoeff reminds me of Erik Johnson.TruBlueFan_1970 wrote: ↑05 Jan 2026 17:08 pmThat’s a good point that I hadn’t thought of. I’m really interested to see who takes a flyer on Galvas …he’s been amazing. Surely someone is taking that chance….heck get an extra pick just to take that kid.

And that’s just girls hockey, and honestly $6-$7k is pretty light in comparison.MiamiLaw wrote: ↑05 Jan 2026 16:12 pm$6 to $7k a year?? A lot of Canadians on Reddit are lamenting Canada hockey and how many are being priced out of the AAA hockey system. Meaning they are only getting the skilled rich kids who are often entitled and not willing to work.
The AAA Lady Blues cost about $6,000-$7,000 a season on the low end. It’s crazy. Especially when you consider that women’s hockey is one of the top 3-5 “easiest” athletic scholarships to learn.
Scan a women’s NCAA roster and check the high schools. You see a lot of Shattuck St Mary’s, a Lot of Brecks, and a lot of academies.

I’m curious to see how high Belchetz goes. This league loves power forwards, especially those that get labeled a “wrecking ball”. I bet he goes top 3.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑05 Jan 2026 17:13 pmSmits might be the first dman off the board but I would take Carels. Yea hockey has always been a high cost entry even for house leagues. Equipment is expensive. Ice tie is expensive. Practice times are usually miserable.Rollin' on the River wrote: ↑05 Jan 2026 17:16 pmAnd that’s just girls hockey, and honestly $6-$7k is pretty light in comparison.MiamiLaw wrote: ↑05 Jan 2026 16:12 pm$6 to $7k a year?? Want to play in the NA3HL? It’ll cost each kid $8-10k. Many times the paying customers aren’t in the stands…they’re on the bench.MiamiLaw wrote: ↑05 Jan 2026 16:12 pm$6 to $7k a year?? Hockey is heading in a bad direction and has been for years. Go look up Black Bear and their monopoly on rink ownership in some areas of the country and their for profit model.
The state of Minnesota and the Wild have an initiative called Skate It Forward that’s designed to keep rinks owned by municipalities and to make hockey cheaper for kids. Where I live, it costs $250/year for my kid to play travel squirts. I’d bet it’s way higher in STL and it’s way WAY higher in some other areas. The game has always been expensive but it’s getting way too out of hand and pricing out a majority of people. It’s why countries like Sweden and Finland, with total populations of 8-12 million people can consistently beat our team even though we have 330 million people.

Well of course not, he’d be a late round pick. He’s been through the draft twice but he looks worthy of a pick to me.Rollin' on the River wrote: ↑05 Jan 2026 17:25 pmNot in the first.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑05 Jan 2026 17:13 pmSmits might be the first dman off the board but I would take Carels. What’s the reason for the low attendance at the WJC’s? I wasn’t expecting sellouts or anything but I would have thought the state of hockey would have shown up a bit better than they did.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑05 Jan 2026 17:27 pmWant to play in the NA3HL? It’s back here in 2031 I think but I don’t know if they announced the city yet or not. Also wondering if that poor attendance will ruin our chances of ever getting it in St. Louis

Did anybody expect Americans to fill the stands? Look at the world we live in, and tell me if you think foreign fans might think twice about coming here.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑05 Jan 2026 18:26 pmWhat’s the reason for the low attendance at the WJC’s?
