Instead of cutting (gutting) payroll, if they had added a couple of pieces they would be in contention for the playoffs. But you're right, now this team is in danger of losing big. Minor league pitchers most likely won't carry this team and they just traded away 20 home runs and probably their best hitter. Yeah, it's going to get ugly unless some young people really step up.Stlcardsblues wrote: ↑22 Dec 2025 16:23 pmI keep seeing people say that this team will be better than some think and in the 75 to 80 win range. I would love to know what they see that has them this positive.
I see a 95 to 100 loss team. This doesn’t mean that I feel the rebuild is the wrong direction (as I mentioned before I completely disagree with how Mo and DeWitt messed up this franchise, but they left it no realistic path to get back to winning that doesn’t involve a rebuild).
Re: ESPN analysis of Contreras trade
Usually a mix of youth and vets is the best mix.
I think this team has physical talent. Bigger concern is between the ears.
Also fundamentals(like base running & plate discipline) need improvement.
And the vets were almost as bad as the young guys in those areas.
Which gets us around to the Manager and coaching staff.

Re: ESPN analysis of Contreras trade
Addition by subtraction with these two.
Mikolas 8-11 4.84 ERA
Pallante 6-15 5.31 ERA
I think the pitching could be as good possibly better this coming year.
On offense there was no young player that had such a great season to think they could not do the same or better. Than you add Wetherholt who I think will eventually be better than Donovan. Contreras is the only loss as of now he played 135 games last year an d Herrera played in only 107.
I think this team has potential to be as good if not slightly better next year.

If any of the players acquired for Contreras are playing for the Cardinals in 3 years, it was a good trade.

Competing to try to sneak into the playoffs is the wrong direction. I watched them try that over and over again. They need to build a team that can go deep into the playoffs.CCard wrote: ↑22 Dec 2025 20:58 pmInstead of cutting (gutting) payroll, if they had added a couple of pieces they would be in contention for the playoffs. It’s time to stop with the putting a mediocre product on the field hoping to go on a magical run. There were no couple pieces which were going to fix this unless DeWitt put a serious infusion of cash into payroll to compete at the top of the free agent class. And even at that the Mets showed that doesn’t always work.
Re: ESPN analysis of Contreras trade
You can build whatever team you want and once in the playoffs they can be bounced by a lesser team. The Cards weren't favored in any of their recent WS champion years. There are enough good players out there to make the Cards competitive, but they won't play for free. Competitive doesn't mean only on the field, you have to be competitive off the field too.Stlcardsblues wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 17:45 pmCompeting to try to sneak into the playoffs is the wrong direction. Yea I’m sure there’s two or three hall of fame players in their primes and a cy young caliber ace and hall of fame manager floating around the cardinals can snatch up like the the 2006 and 2011 team hadCCard wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 19:37 pmYou can build whatever team you want and once in the playoffs they can be bounced by a lesser team. Re: ESPN analysis of Contreras trade
There's any number of free agent pitchers that would be much better than Mikolas or Pallante was. Other teams sign them, why can't the Cards? Instead they go for the low hanging fruit. Lynn at the end of his rope and Gibson and the end of his rope and Fedde who didn't have a lot of ropt to begin with. Take that money they wasted and get a decent to really good pitcher. You might have to kick in a few more bucks but then you give your team a fighting chance in a short series. As for hitting, there's people out there that are better than anyone in the outfiel and now in the infield also.Cardinals1964 wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 21:16 pmWho would you like to see them sign that would make them competitive in 2026?CCard wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 19:37 pmYou can build whatever team you want and once in the playoffs they can be bounced by a lesser team. Neither team was favored to win it all. We had Goldy, Arenado, Pujols, Molina, Wainwright and we still didn't even get to the WS much less win it.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 19:50 pmYea I’m sure there’s two or three hall of fame players in their primes and a cy young caliber ace and hall of fame manager floating around the cardinals can snatch up like the the 2006 and 2011 team hadCCard wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 19:37 pmYou can build whatever team you want and once in the playoffs they can be bounced by a lesser team. There was nothing out there that was realistic that was going to make this team a contender. A try to get in and hope for a playoff run is the worst team to build. Those teams get bounced early almost everytime if they even make it. It’s time to build a deep roster.CCard wrote: ↑23 Dec 2025 19:37 pmYou can build whatever team you want and once in the playoffs they can be bounced by a lesser team.
