Comparisons to Alveraz is not applicable as he doesn’t have the hit tool of Alveraz. They view Emerson, Sloan ,Anderson and Farmelo as the untouchables.
People may not be as high on Cijntje but he was rated as having the best fastball in their minors hitting upper 90’s from the right side. He does have more of a reliever profile than a starter though.
The most sure prospect outside of Emerson is Arroyo. He’s learning to play the outfield this winter after playing on the infield. With his plate discipline and good contact rates he could turn into a right handed Donovan down the road with the ability to play multiple positions with a bit more power and speed but not quite the defender.
Cijntje, Arroyo and a comp b pick would be a haul for Donovan. Most likely would have to include a reliever such as Jo Jo but in that case Cards should ask for another prospect in the 10 to 15 range.

Re: Woo says Mariners and Giants want Donovan
He got $20M! 30 years old coming off an injury-plagued season where he only played 48 games and posted a .649 OPS. Donovan is more than a year younger, has two years of control at a much cheaper price, and offers a much higher offensive profile.
Re: Woo says Mariners and Giants want Donovan
No way of knowing exactly how the negotiations are going, but if I’m the Cardinals, I start with Sloan, and then advance from there.
The Cardinals probably don’t want to give up Donovan for just Sloan, because he is a few years away, and could always flame out. However, he should be the first name coming back to the Cardinals and then work out the deal around him. If the Cardinals are also wanting Montes, then they will, probably need to add to the deal. Maybe Pete Hansen, or Chase Davis. Maybe it’s JoJo, or a guy like Granillo. There are a lot of options, but to me, it has to start with Donovan and Sloan. I’m not really liking anything from the Giants, but keep them in the talks just to show the Mariners that there are other options.

anybody read the viva el birdos aritcle I linked on previous page?
Re: Woo says Mariners and Giants want Donovan
I just read it.
Marte, Hoerner and Chisholm would be competing trade chips.
I don't believe Cubs or Yankees would sacrifice playoff chances without adequate MI replacement. I don't know what they have coming in their systems.
If D-backs don't augment starting pitching, they may be in sell and rebuild mode. So Marte is still a threat to a Donovan hall. Though he has big contract and they won't trade to their division.
The Braves are probably out on Donovan with the Kim sign.
Also Mariners just added Knizner at Catcher. So adding Crooks to a Donovan package doesn't get anything better from the Mariners.

It's a bit of musical chairs though isn't it? Chisholm to Seattle, Then Marte to NYY type thing. Or cut out SeattleRunSup wrote: ↑16 Dec 2025 14:44 pmI just read it.

and do Chisholm for Marte. Marte has a nice contract for now through age 34 in 2028. The contract goes 3 year
past that though. $16M those years just doesn't sound Seattle like to me.
For AZ with 10/5 that Marte's contract becomes a full NTC after this season.

It is Musical Chairs amongst the teams with their infielders.
In the mean time the Cardinals are playing a "bank" vs "press-your-luck" game with the offers on the table against the offer they want to get.
But, they don't actually have to trade Donovan. Many fans would be fine with that. May need to reconsider extending him then.

The Cards still have Donovan who has appeal to others not named in any of theseRunSup wrote: ↑16 Dec 2025 17:24 pmrenostl wrote: ↑16 Dec 2025 15:19 pmIt's a bit of musical chairs though isn't it? teams. They should be ok on this one.
What IF BD wants to test the market. IF that happens to be, now is the best
time to move him.
