Served with this steak as well as the other main courses and the platters of tacos and enchiladas is a side dish of “Mexican rice” and black beans separated by a moat of pico de gallo. The rice is about as flavorful as Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice fresh from the microwave pouch. The black beans are bland, too, but the menu doesn’t make any claims about their provenance.

If you want a really good Mexican restaurant, you have two choices. If you want great basic Tex-Mex at a low price, Mi Ranchito is it. For a bit more upscale fare, it's El Milagro Azteca.

I will second El Milagro Azteca. I've had very positive lunch experiences on several occasions.

Agree about Mi Ranchito.
Milagro Azteca is on my list, but haven't been there.
We did go to Nixta last Friday. That's one of the best restaurants of any kind in 314. It was just incredible. I'm currently experimenting with mezcal and cognacs to try to recreate one of their cocktails. They call it "Veinte y Ocho," and if I get it right, you won't hear from me until I get back from rehab.
