The Cards may be worse than the Pirates next year. They are taking a step back next year and focusing on acquiring prospects, then building a better player development system so more of those prospects succeed. When that is in place and they are on an upward trajectory they can strategically acquire higher price FAs. If they continued down the old path their ceiling was basically the 83 win team from '24. They don't have the payroll to outspend the big boys so they need to be smarter.

They're never going to "Outspend" the big boys. They don't need to though. Get into the playoffs and in a short series anyone can win. All it takes is an error, homer, hit, passed ball, strikeout etc etc. They can spend a lot more than they are spending. Get a couple of decent to good pitchers and maybe a good hitter for LF and see what happens.
