As said the whole team is playing poorly. They pointed out last night some shifts that were way too long and that leads to a goal against. Managing the puck to allow timely changes is not easy but something they should be able to do at this level. Do the coaches not see this or do they not know how to coach this? You could tell they could barely move and that is going to be worse typically for the older guys.

Coaching specific problems can be video sessions or on ice sessions and they do not seem to be doing that. After they clean this up go to breakouts, going to the net consistently, winning puck battles, and so on.
They’ve really struggled to clear their zone effectively this year, allowing for the D to change, especially in the 2nd when the change is dependent on possession or a deep dump in. They were bad last year, but it’s brutal this year.

Fowler got caught in long shifts a couple times. As far as his extension, not a fan. Like the player, but I bet a TDL deal of Fowler at 50% retained would have brought back a decent pick/prospect from a contender. Now, we have him at $6.1m annually starting next year for 3 years. Don’t see the logic in that for a team in our current state.
Especially when we’re supposed to have some very good D prospects ready to start playing durin the term of his extension. I said at the time it was idiotic to sign him without seeing him play for a whole season first since he would be under contract anyways, and Ill stick to that sentiment forever.
Ok, but how many threads were around earlier this season about “boy, I wish we still had Suter or Leddy around to mentor Mailloux” well, now we’ll have that guy when the kids come. It’s $4M/yr which is the new $2M with the cap rising.
Unless I’m mistaken, it’s $6.1m AAV starting next season when his 3-year deal starts. He’s $4m this year on the last season of his ANA contract. That’s pretty pricey whether it’s old or new cap. McDonaugh just resigned with Tampa in the $4m range.
I could be wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time. I’d have sworn it was 4. Oh well

McDonaugh will be 37 when his deal starts and 40 in the last year and Tampa seems to be a far more desirable destination than STL. Having said that I'd take both deals for the Blues right now.

In a season of stupid and lazy plays. I can’t believe his drop off from last season.
I can. It's why smart GMs don't extend vets for a few months of exceptional hockey when they haven't proven they can do it for more than a few months.
He’s played over 1000 games. He’s proven he can do it.
His extension rate is a Dman who puts up 10 goals and 35+ pts per season.

But he's done that less than half his career and he's nowhere near that so far this season, at least the goals, which this team is desperately starved for.

Just saying, extending him 3 years at his rate and age was, ehhhh ... foolhardy?

Don't have time to find the right word. Should have let him play out his contract before extending, especially since Mailloux essentially provides 0 offense right now, which is frustrating since that's supposed to be his upside.

Well Fowler is not/will not be the reason we don't also have another d man better than Fowler.

We needed Fowler a lot more than Fowler needed us so that doesn't leave much negotiating leverage for us.
