I did go to a game this year for the first time in nearly a decade - glad I could be of assistance!

I’m a Drink supporter. I think this is a good thing for the program. All that said, as I’ve said on here many a time, Mizzou neglects other highly popular SEC sports like baseball in order to keep up in football. But at some point, is it worth it to neglect other important sports and be middle of the pack in football?

if we don’t make a playoff or two within the next 3-5 years and if we don’t have an SEC title, it won’t have been worth the fortune we’re spending on football.
Well what are they supposed to do if not go all in on the football program in this conference?

Believe me MU could win a natty in baseball and if the football team isnt relevant only a small handful of people are going to give a (drat) and I'm the biggest baseball fan you'll ever know.

Football drives the boat more now than ever. LSU, Penn St., and Florida can't find enough top candidates to consider let alone hire yet.

With the portal and paying players there's going to be less ideal choices when it comes to changing head coaches.

Im as frustrated as anyone with the close but no cigar [nonsense] but starting all over again after being this close isnt needed at this time.

I agree football is the driving force for all schools. I’m just saying, Mizzou neglects baseball in a way really no other SEC school does. Baseball has never been huge at Mizzou so most fans don’t realize it, but baseball is HUGE in the SEC. Almost as big as basketball. I know we’re not going to win championships in baseball any time soon. It would be nice to just not be humiliating. Bieser was at least respectable, and they did the dumbest thing ever and fired him and hired Jackson with virtually no experience. And he’s just tanked it.

Mizzou could dump money into baseball and finish middle of the pack just as they do in football. Mizzou dumping money into baseball isn’t the same as Texas doing it, same as football. The reality is our local talent disadvantage will always mean it takes more than simply a financial commitment.

But hey I get it, anything to whine about what Mizzou is doing wrong. Mizzou locks up their best football coach in two decades and the response is “yea but let’s focus on what they aren’t doing”.

Foolish.

Same ol' same ol' is in our future for us Tiger fans. Ya see it's in MIZZOU's blood to be mediocre...they are the very definition of what it means to play not to lose. Whether on the field lacking complete confidence in their play calls and/or their players to make plays, or in the management side concerned they are letting go of a 65% winning coach so they give him a raise and ANOTHER 6 years of pretending to be a HC...they predict the outcome before it has even played out, and then act accordingly.

Don't lose Drink, Don't lose Drink, Don't lose Drink....those are the chants of fear. There's two types of people in the world....Athenians and Spartans. The Athenians fear nothing, expecting every move they make will payoff in spades. Historically the Athenians were eager to venture out into the world to acquire something NEW! They lived in a golden age wherein they were influenced by merchants and immigrants bringing new cultures, ideas, and never before seen innovations. They prospered and traveled the seas looking for something NEW!...they weren't afraid.

The Spartans on the other hand, the most FEROCIOUS warriors of all time, were AFRAID of the unknown peoples and the potential for them to soil their culture and way of life. They were a closed society to outsiders, whom they FEARED! A Spartan fights for the status quo, while an Athenian is always looking to better themselves.....never fearing loss but rather always expecting greatness! Ya know...like Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Ohio State, and the legendary Nebraska and Oklahoma teams of the Tom Osborne and Barry Switzer eras...who btw repeatedly kicked our Tiger's all over the place annually in the Big 8 & 12 days.

Don't let a good life keep you from a better one....

Disagree. They have limited funds so they have to be all in on football and basketball. They have no choice. Very few people
Would rather have great golf and track with 4-8 football teams and not making ncaa basketball tournaments. Investing heavily in football and basketball is the only option.

How are all the other SEC schools doing it in baseball? And they regularly draw 5-10k per game at most other SEC ballparks. Over 10k in some like Arkansas. We are so far behind in baseball it’s embarrassing. It matters because we’re in the SEC and they love their baseball.

That $250 million spent on upgrading Memorial Stadium for example. If $200 million had been spent on the football stadium upgrade and $50 million put toward baseball they could have fired Jackson, paid and hired a real coach and staff, and done a complete renovation on Taylor Stadium - which is BADLY needed. A new park that isn’t high up on a cold, windy hill is what is really needed, but beggars can’t be choosers.

Interesting analogy, but I could sum all this up with 4 words from Chaucer: Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Because the states of Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, South Carolina, Mississippi and Alabama don’t have Major League Baseball. College baseball has always been immensely popular in the south at least partly bc that’s all they have, plus some minor league teams. Missouri baseball has never been interesting to Mizzou sports fans because they have the cardinals and, I guess, the Royals. Baseball will never be a significant revenue generator. My hot take is Missouri would have a harder time competing in baseball than in football in the sec, even if they did invest in the program. And they could build a 10k seat stadium, but it would be about 15-20% full. It’s just not going to happen. You won’t find 10,000 people wanting to watch a Mizzou baseball game in 45 degree weather on a March Saturday, much less a midweek afternoon.

You bring up a good point on no pro teams. There are some minor league teams spread around, but even those do not draw big fans. This may be a chicken or egg item, but the college baseball teams get a lot more media attention. In Knoxville, when they play baseball it is one of the top stories on the evening news sports segment. The interview coaches and players, they talk about upcoming schedule, and treat it like they do basketball. I was in Columbia for a few weeks at my daughters, and even in Columbia it did not get anything other than a quick score update. No video highlights post game interviews, etc… When I lived in St. Louis, Missouri baseball never made the news.

Over the last two seasons Mizzou has had three, home-conference series on the same weekend when BOTH the Cardinals AND Royals were at home.

A fourth time one of those teams were at home. The fifth series was in March before the MLB season began.

I would surmise it has been that way or similar for many years before that.

LITERALLY NO ONE gives a hoot about C baseball in a state with two MLB teams that have won World series. So give it a rest, hope everyone does what I do and ghost this fool. READ THE ROOM nitwit.

I have been trumpeting to you all he wasn't going anywhere and he did what he needed to do. His agent turned all the internet buzz and media spec into much bigger NIL and assistants budget which is what he needed to be competitive with the big brands. I was a Headhunter and used that tactic all the time to get bigger deals for my candidates, especially when it was [nonsense] and companies wanted to low ball them. All you had to do is talk about their rivals better offer and voila! they often stepped it up. Usually there wasn't any other offers but perception is more important and egos.

Why would you leave the rocking chair job where your family is happy at and fans are tame? never made any sense.

Classic troll post from 148.

He's attacking Drink for something he's admittedly done in the past, even though there's been no indication that he needed to get his agent involved.

Sorry, I get most money is going to football. But the hill I will die on is you can’t neglect baseball and be a member of the SEC. Look around the conference.

I get the argument we’re a crowded baseball state already with Cards and Royals. But I’d argue we love baseball and routinely get 30k to baseball games. So if Mizzou is good, getting 3-4K to baseball games shouldn’t be too much to ask. Nobody wants to watch a bad baseball team in 40 degree weather in March. Lots of people will watch if it’s really good baseball. Especially if it’s in a great place to watch, which Taylor is not. It’s terrible.

I know that’s not the point of this thread. I want to make the point as we secure Drink for the future that we realize probably the 2nd or 3rd most popular sport in the SEC is something Mizzou is ignoring.

Details of the new contract per Power Mizzou:

https://x.com/PowerMizzoucom/status/1998158851032613151

@PowerMizzoucom
Biggest notes from Eli Drinkwitz's new contract:

Staff pool increases from $12 million to $16 million
Any year in which #Mizzou wins 8 regular season games or more will trigger an automatic one-year extension to the deal.

That last line is crazy. So basically if he goes 4-4 in conference and beats the 4 OOC games, he gets another year. A conference record of 0.500 is the definition of accepting mediocrity. They are just saying stay in the middle of the SEC and goes to the Music City or Gator bowl every year and you are golden. This is sad when other teams are demanding perfection and removing coaches for winning just 8 games.
