Re: Holy Sheet!!!--Cards having preliminary talks to EXTEND Oli Marmol
We have an interesting situation. The initial reactions to Bloom seems to be quite positive. He has hired a lot of new staff for the development of players and performance area of the team. His first trade with Sonny Gray seems to have good vibes as well. So generally very good early reviews for Bloom . They trust his judgment and like his new direction. Now with this Marmol possible extension story , some of those same posters claim Bloom is a fool, idiot, etc. if he extends Oli Marmol. So which is he ?

Cool. So who else should have been playing that we clearly missed out on these two years? And who should've been hitting where? Enlighten me, Earl Weaver. What could Marmol have done to fix this team.Melville wrote: ↑27 Nov 2025 10:24 amHe decides who plays.Strummer Jones wrote: ↑27 Nov 2025 10:07 amMarmol does not have final say who is on the roster.Melville wrote: ↑27 Nov 2025 09:33 amThe Marmot is a weak, obedient member of the STL rodent community, perfectly willing to remain prey for superior predators at the expense of living a minimalist existence for as long as he can survive.Strummer Jones wrote: ↑27 Nov 2025 09:15 am I hate this.
Because now I have to read and hear a bunch of simpletons shout to the hills that the manager is the problem with this deeply, deeply flawed team for the past four years.
Who gave Mikolas 31 starts?
The Marmot.
Who obediently denied starts to McGreevy until it will too late and irrelevant, even though he was the far superior option?
The Marmot.
Who refused to bench N/A simply because of his contract, wasting yet another season of giving opportunities to younger, better players?
The Marmot.
Who continued to play Lars The Human-Sushi-baar and repeat the propaganda that he was "a long term core player" at the direction of Super Slo Mo - even though it had been obvious for years that the outfielder was no such thing and never would be?
The Marmot.
Who made the laughably inept decision to begin the season with Herrera as the anointed starting catcher - even though Ivan has never displayed even the most basic competency at the position and had been rejected by the pitching staff?
The Marmot.
On and on and on the list could go.
Oliver Marmol has badly mismanaged the roster simply because he is too weak, too much of a yes man for the front office, too interested in being liked rather than respected by players.
We can fairly debate the quality of the roster he has had to work with each year.
But he consistently gets less from it than he should.
Marmol said as diplomatically as he could that he wanted to put in McGreevy for Fedde.
Consistently gets less than he should from the roster!? A roster that includes Miles Mikolas, Garret Hampson, Erick Fedde, and Andre Pallante?
Melville, if you weren't consistently enjoying the smell of your own farts on here, I would absolutely think you were joking.
When.
And where.
The Marmot has consistently been terrible in those decisions.
As illustrated though my perfect list of examples above - which is but a small sampling of the many mistakes he has made.
You made the claim. You bring the receipts.

"There are some solid baseball people in the organization who obviously see OM as an asset."Idaho Cards wrote: ↑27 Nov 2025 09:42 am My experience is that most people are not as good as they seem, or as bad as they seem. They're probably somewhere in the middle. There are some solid baseball people in the organization who obviously see OM as an asset. I think a litmus test will be how he handles spring training with such a young roster.
Interesting point - and not wrong.
That is, not wrong to the extent that there are those who view him as an asset - but those people holding that view are very much mistaken.
I had intended on making this very point based on a specific experience in my own career, prior to reading your post.
Your post will provide me with a convenient segue.
And I will provide an in-depth and perfectly accurate explanation as to precisely why The Marmot has survived - and how it will be extremely detrimental to the organization each day he remains.
But, out of necessity, that must come later today.
Many of us are facing a busy day and I am no exception - walking out the door as quickly as I complete this post.
Stay tuned.

You have it all wrong sir. If the Cards had Terry Francona the last 4 years, we'd have 4 more World Series trophies. Let's not pay attention to the fact that the Cards were ahead of the Reds in the standings until the trade deadline sell off and that Francona's amazing managerial talents went 0-2 in the playoffs. Disregard all of that.Strummer Jones wrote: ↑27 Nov 2025 10:30 amCool. So who else should have been playing that we clearly missed out on these two years? And who should've been hitting where? It would be interesting to see how he would do with a decent team…
Perhaps Rock’s Boner will provide that…

OK I am not on the "hate Oli" bus. But I do not get this. He isn't anything special IMO as a manager. I expect they will want a proven leader in 2027 and beyond.
Re: Holy Sheet!!!--Cards having preliminary talks to EXTEND Oli Marmol
I'm sick of hearing about how much the players love him. Who cares about that in a manager? I want the players to respect him. There is selective accountability with this manager. How is that good for young players or any players?
Some seem to have forgotten how he threw Tyler O'Neil and Willson Contreras under the bus.
And during games, there is no accountability. Herrera made stupid base running errors in 1 extra ining, yet he was allowed to remain in the game. A game that they lost because of him.
And that's just one example.
Then we get to his coaching staff. Why is Brant Brown still here? Remember how we were told he was doing wonders with Gorman and Walker last offseason? Yeah, what happened? And what about Scott, Nootbaar and Arenado? He really helped them. And why is Pop Warner still here as 3B base coach? He's terrible.

That is funnyStlcardsblues wrote: ↑27 Nov 2025 09:51 amThe one thing this board has taught me is it doesn’t matter who the manager is, unless his name is Terry Francona this board will feel the manager is terrible.
This board hated LaRussa, Matheny and Schildt.

He’s a paint by numbers manager isn’t good at getting the team to play good fundamentally but the players like him and I’m sure they don’t want him feeling any pressure to be good at his job or win
You try and justify it all you want.
I thought for sure he'd be gone at end of this past season.
Thought Bloom would want his guy.
I know Oli has 1 year remaining, but why even think to extend.
He hasn't earned any extension.
This could turn out to be the off season from hell.

Re: Holy Sheet!!!--Cards having preliminary talks to EXTEND Oli Marmol
The general consensus among baseball analysts is that a manager's direct impact on the win column in a single season is relatively small , often cited in the range of 2 to 5 additional wins .
The primary determinant of a team's success is the quality of the players. As the saying goes 'good players make a good manager' .
So player talent is paramount.

The extension talks with Marmol , while you may not agree, should come as no surprise to Cardinal fans. At Bloom's first press conference back in late September when he said Marmol would be returning for 2026, he also added that later in the offseason he would explore extension talks with his manager.Bully4you wrote: ↑27 Nov 2025 02:59 am Wow.

Guess that got overlooked by some back then.
Here is part of the Goold reporting ...
This is the first year atop baseball operations for Chaim Bloom. He immediately confirmed that Marmol would be back for his fifth season at the helm. Bloom said in late September that the sides had yet to begin extension talks but noted those were likely to take place over the offseason.
